GLACIER FRESH XWF Replacement for GE XWF Refrigerator Water Filter 3 Pack

GE discontinued the original XWF filter for my fridge, so I decided to try this one and I’m really glad I did. Installation was shockingly easy. I had it swapped out in about 15 seconds. It clicked right into place, perfect fit, and I’ve had zero issues with leaking. The price is much better than the original GE filters, and the water quality is great. My water and ice both taste crisp and clean, with no odd aftertaste or cloudiness. If you’ve been stressing about what to use now that the GE XWF is discontinued, this is a solid replacement. Easy install, no leaks, great-tasting water, and a much better value.

First of all, my Thanks to the Amazon and Youtube community for posting details on how to peel off the cover on the $50 XWFE filter and wrap it around this $10 Glacier filter so that my GE Frig's water system will dispense water. I was so angry last year when I realized that I would have to pay $50 for an obscenely expensive GE XWFE filter because the $10 Glacier filter did not work because it did not have a chip embedded into the "peel off" cover. The $10 Glacier filter is just as effective as the $50 GE XWFE filter!!!

So far so good, very easy to install, I paid attention to the original filter I took out, and installed it in less then 30 seconds. The filter reset light is still on but I will wait and see if it goes away in a day or two. Update November 3, 2019: Filter reset button doesn’t go away, big bummer for me but I did put a sticker on my other filter with October on it so I know to replace it after 6 months. Ran around 3 gallons out so not sure of water taste yet. Will let u know later same as reset button. Update November 3, 2019: The water doesn’t taste as good as the original filter, that one takes out more impurities and other things, but it’s not bad, 6 out of 10 for me and I drink only water. As for the box no label covering the NSF testing as pics show. It doesn’t filter out as much crap as the original but for the price I’m not going to complain until there is a problem. Final verdict: it’s okay, still 2 for less then half price of the original. But I think I will switch back to the original after I use the next filter. I prefer my water to be crisp and not have an aftertaste. So I’ve revised my 5 stars to 3. The taste and filte4 reset button bugs me. May 15, 2020 Finally replaced the water filter, I should’ve stated that the water filter light did finally turn off and I can’t remember when it was. It’s okay the water does comes out faster and it still tastes okay. So I’m going to 4 stars.

Great value and is just as good as name brand.

Few pointers. 1) The RFID hack works. First, take pictures of everything, so you have spatial context of where the RFID (weather balloon shaped) is on the filter once the filter is installed. The RFID needs to be against the back wall and directly in the middle of the filter. The 1/2" by 3" rectangular array does not seem to play a role in validating the filter is legit. Fyi. Still be carefull with everything. Use a hairdryer on HOT to start working the label off. Be patient, working a corner up, progressing to 3-4mm of that full edge. Why? You want to get your pull from edge to edge, distributing the force of the pull. It took me 10-15 minutes to carefully remove the label. You want to do flat pulls (not aggressive angle pulls) so as to damage the RFID metallic traces. You compromise that, you are screwed (unless you can solder which would be easy). Take your time. I decided to simply attach my still-sticky label to the fridge wall, placing the "weather balloon" RFID center and to just below top of the flange the new filter screws into... and then kept the excess to the left lightly tacked to the back wall. This is the most favorable install because you do this once. This versus apply that sticker to the filter itself (which will eventually degrade the RFID simply from too much handling. My journey is that above. $60 original swapped out, and 3 replacement filters at $10 a piece in its place. 2) This filter connects just fine, despite 1 star poster comments. Two points here: - the water ports, while same dimensions, the openings are different (circle vs. half moon). It's okay, the design works with either. They could be star-shaped cut outs and it would be okay. - Someone said "it doesn't screw in or seat properly". What I will tell you is when you install, you first line up the filter correctly under the flange, the PUSH UP LIGHTLY the filter whilst apply equal light force downwards on the top of the flange (offset forces) and you will see that you gain another 1-2 mm by doing that, which in turn makes the "twist right 1/4 turn" work smoothly. You are just pre-seating the water injection tube's rubber o-rings into the filter, which yields that 1-2mm space. Photos: 1) the RFID label adhered behind the filter, and 2) the sketched-out RFID trace design to help with orientation.

**I need to add this, I see now in the additional info under the description of these there is the statement "These are not a replacement for the GE XWFE cartridges", that was not there when I bought these in September and these were a suggested alternative. Based on several other 1* reviews, it seems I wasn't the only one to make this mistake as they were supposed to be a suitable alternative for the XWFE. I see they are now specifically excluded, which is due to others finding this out and returning them** We bought a new GE refrigerator last year and replaced our 22+ year old one (which was still working fine). Reading through instructions, I found the directions to replace the water filter every 6 months or so. I immediately searched for the specific filters (XWFE) and found it here, along with these Glacier Fresh filters. They were much cheaper (3 for 30, vs. 1 for 50) so I bought a GE filter and the three pack to compare. Last night out filter light came on and pulled one of the new Glacier Fresh filters and attempted to replace the existing one. They DO NOT FIT. When comparing the sizes, they are very close, the connections are different. The GE filter (on the right in the photo) compared to the Glacier are not compatible. I was able to seat it into the filter connection, but because of the lack of proper holes in the Glacier Fresh filter, the fridge would not recognize it and it would not reset the filter. This locked up my water button, I double checked it was seated (as best as it could be) and then removed it. I put in the new GE filter (XWFE) and it seated perfectly, and reset the filter mechanism. Because I bought these 5 months ago, I cannot return them and they were a complete waste of money. I will purchase ONLY the GE XWFE filters and ensure I have a couple stored for when the new one reaches its end. While I was careful comparing these, I found the statement "These are a direct replacement for XWFE filters", they are not. Just make sure you double check before you invest and open the package to see if a new off-brand filter is really a direct replacement option. Also, you should also read your owner's manual carefully, many models are eligible to receive a bypass plug, free from GE. I also found this out when reordering new filters direct from GE and seeing the bypass plug, (which allows you to use the water/ice maker without any filter) and it's listed for 27.00, but the comments/reviews mention numerous times this is a free product (per the owner's manual). I double checked and sure enough it is for mine as well. I called and requested it, (having registered the warranty when we bought it) and they said "no problem, it's on the way". Why it isn't included with the fridge is simple, so we'll spend the money on filters and hope you don't notice the bypass option.

Attention new ge fridge owners whose fridge has xwfe filters, these work. However, it takes a bit of finessing, and an oem filter to work. You basically have to use a blow dryer to weaken the adhesive holding the sticker onto an oem filter, take the sticker off, and tape it to the back of your fridge specifically to have the rfid chip to be up against the rfid chip reader in the fridge. Look up a YouTube video to do just that. And when you're done, the filters will work perfectly fine, the red light for filter status will just be perpetually on your fridge, but the filters will work good as new, you'll just have the manually keep track of when to replace them. Took me 5 minutes to do all that, and now I can save over 80% on filters rather than buying the oem rfid chip ones for 55 bucks a piece. Just trying to spread the word because ge is totally ripping off their customers with oem filters. This is a good work around.
