Great for planning hiking trips on a map!
I love that it is flat and easy to read. I am in a land navigation class and we have to find the azimuth and create our pathways, and this is easier to use than a compass because I can lay my straight-edge or scale right over the top of it and not lose accuracy because of a lip or raised edge.

Broken and misleading
The protractor showed up snapped when I got it and was inverted to proper military land navigation standards. Needed to throw away

Yay
Its plastic so be careful

These things are hard to beat.
I do on occasion navigate with these, as I've been using them for years, however I am highly trigonometric, and will sometimes use them as an angle checksum, to either save time, or confirm angle when they are to fine to discern.Practicing mathematical proofs, formulas and the construction of scale railway track, I often find myself working with angles far below 5° and these things can save a lot of time.......but that's minutia. In open wilderness it is wise to back up a compass with a protractor, and I need to get a course quickly set, not try to figure out if the there are iron bearing compounds in the soil of the forest floor while using a compass as a magnetic protractor. These things are a "need to carry" navigation aid in any wilderness pack.
