Can this game be played on the 2ds console?

yes you can! All 3ds games work on the 2ds, just without the 3d effect.

Does it support other languages (i.e. Spanish)?

Yes it does, but you have to change the language of your console, yes I tried to spanish, but for another language I'm not sure.

I've heard that the characters are hard to see on a regular 3DS. Do I need to buy an XL to enjoy this game or is this criticism exaggerated?

I have the new 3ds xl and just got this game the 2ds was too small for me to play it on (i'm 41 and wear glasses) I can manage it on the original 3ds (higher resolution screen) but it is much more fun on the new xl.
