Don’t believe everything you read
I installed these on a 2013 Softail Heritage Classic (FLSTC).The Amazon “garage” said this item would not fit my motorcycle. The "garage" was wrong. The fit is just about perfect.TL;DR – These are a significant improvement over the stock shocks. Allowing for the fact that the rear suspension on the softail has only limited travel, these do a very good job of smoothing out the small bumps in the road and taking the sharp jarring out of the bigger bumps. Knowing what I know now, I would do it again.I would suggest those who are in a quandary go to the manufacturer’s web site and do a search for fitment for their ride. Then come back to the Amazon site and search for the manufacture’s part number. Believe the part number. Maybe believe the picture supplied (the picture for the 422-4037C happens to be correct). Don’t, necessarily, believe the Amazon garage when/if it says the part recommended by the manufacture’s website won’t fit your ride.Getting bike off the ground: I’ve read some to say that one can install these with the bike’s rear wheel off the ground and the bike supported by the jiffy stand, the front wheel, and a jack under the right side of the frame. I couldn’t get that to work and was afraid to try too hard as that just seemed to put the three contact points with the ground in too much of a straight line. I tried to use my motorcycle lift (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UAOLA7I) but to lift the motorcycle I had to put the lift supports right across the stock shocks – meaning I couldn’t remove the shocks. I ended up with the bike supported by a 4x4 on jack stands just in front of the swing-arm and the front wheel on a floor jack (of course the bike was strapped to the width of the 4x4, greatly limiting the amount of wiggle).Removing the OEM shocks did not present much of a problem.Installation tips: 1) Loosen the preset nut before installing – just makes setting the preset that much easier. 2) Install the rear mounting bolts before tightening the forward mounting nuts. 3) The supplied preset adjustment wrench is a bit wiggly on a ratchet. I used a 3/8” drive breaker bar instead and used electrical tape to make it less wiggly. 4) The height adjustment of the shock does not seem to allow for raising the height of the bike above stock. There is some 2.5” of lowering capability. The documentation/instructions that come with the shocks indicate that the shocks come from the factory with the preset set to the minimum (softest) setting. I weigh just about 200 pounds and found firming up the preset about 1.5 turns (on both shocks) is on the stiff end of right for me. Have yet to determine if this is the right setting for riding two-up with the wife.

Well made!
Somewhat fiddly install but that's the fault of my bike, 2000 Fatboy. The shocks seem well made, nice chrome finish. Instructions are easily understood. I'm pleased so far. I need to get some miles on them in order to ascertain the effectiveness of these shocks. Shipping was very prompt.

These shocks are very adjustable
These shocks are very adjustable and can be made to work with your specific weight.

Works great on my lowered Deuce
You can find lots of reviews on 422s on softails, but I'll review here on amazon.com.This is not sold by amazon.com but the seller was great and got it drop shipped for me. So cudos to him for that and the good communication. Now to the shocks. My softail deuce was running stock shocks with the lowering bolts mounted. I'd say it was lowered a good 2.5" from stock. I'm 30 and in good health and my lower back was KILLING me from the hard bumps and bottoming out.I used these shocks and at first lowered it about 1.75" from stock and had the preload set to factory (near softest setting). Went on a cruise and it was MUCH better than stock. Better but not perfect. since I didn't have much travel till it hit the bumpstops. So i raised it higher to about 1.5"-1.6 lower than stock and soften the preload a bit more. Now i'm happy with the ride, the height, and the look. I'm about 160 so I wanted lighter preload than most. They recommend you get 3/4" sag when sitting on the bike vs. not. I'm not getting that 3/4" but closer to 1/2". However the bike sags about 1/4"+ from the bikes weight on itself. I had my bro that's 190 sit on it and it sagged a LOT more.Installation wasn't too bad but getting the nuts off on the rear of shocks will be a pain without the right tools. 3/4 open wrench and hammer did the trick.

Better than stock Yep
If I can do it ...........Any with decent mechanical skills and tools should be able to install. Watch videos and studying parts list , recommend for novices like myself.I replaced front and rear at same time. The bike was lowered at purchase so this was done to restore to stock height. The difference in hight alone in enough to change the ride experience.I don’t to to much ride foolery so I can’t say what a huge difference it made but I can say for sure I no longer have to ride around the speed bumps in my community. I just glide over like they are almost not even there.I felt a better ride for sure so I give progressive shocks a good recommendation for price ride and ease of installation.

Really happy with my bike now...
Am running these on an '09 Fatboy and they are a definite improvement over the stock shocks. I also fitted the progressive cartridge inserts for the front forks (which I REALLY REALLY RECOMMEND) and between them, they transformed the bike. To cut and paste from my other review (front forks) "They make the whole bike feel smoother and much more "planted". Corners are more predictable and stable, the ride is smoother, the bike feels more coordinated and all in all inspires more confidence."I have done a lot of work on this bike but before you tackle performance and aesthetics consider these shocks and the cartridge inserts (which are actually cheaper) for the front end.

Best purchase that I have made for my Harley.
I dropped the height of my bike 1-1/2". The ride is a thousand times better. The bike used to feel like was ridiculously heavy. Now it moves easily. Love the shocks. Also, my bike is a 2004 fxstdse2, which Amazon says they don't fit. They are perfect.

Increase Stability & Handling
I installed these on my 2001 Softail Duece. FXSTD. Fit like a glove even though this site said it wouldn’t fit my particular application. I did my research before final purchase and they fit perfectly. Also Lowered the rear almost a full 2 inches and increased stability in turns as well increased handling through bumps, especially while into a hard turn. Absolutely would say these are a superior product over the stock application !
