The so80s series goes artist specific with these single disc 12" collections
Glad to see this new turn for the so80s series. After four volumes of various artists, compilers Blank & Jones are now focusing their attention on individual 80s acts and bringing a bunch of their 12" mixes together on one disc. Of course, none of these is really definitive, and a lot of this stuff has appeared on other compilations. The Heaven 17 volume has a bunch of stuff that has already been on the reissues of their albums, but collectors may find a couple of standouts they never had on CD before. Track list is:1. let me go (extended mix) 06:212. temptation (special dance mix) 04:403. height of the fighting (12'' mix) 02:584. we live so fast (extended mix) 06:105. play to win (extended mix) 07:246. who'll stop the rain (extended mix) 06:157. penthouse and pavement (full length version) 06:248. trouble (us club mix) 06:449. come live with me (extended mix) 04:3410. this is mine (extended mix) 05:4211. crushed by the wheels of industry parts 1&2 06:5912. (we don't need this) fascist groove thang (12" mix) 04:5613. heaven 17 megamix 07:50

とても期待したのですが…
このブランク&ジョーンズのシリーズはリミックスがカッコ良く集めています。ここにわれらがヘブン17の登場です。しかしどの曲もあまり上手いとは言えないミックスです。ガッカリしました。

Original 12" mixes - but some slightly tampered with
Having bought the OMD issue, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I plumped for this H17 disc, even though I have several compilation CDs of 12" mixes/remixes by the band already. The attraction was the tracklisting, including "Trouble" US 12" (a first on CD I think), "Who'll Stop The Rain" 12" and the hope (as per claims surrounding the OMD disc) that EMI might've again given Blank & Jones access to master tapes. As per OMD, artwork is fairly minimal, and rather dated in a nice way (the picture of the band is from very early 80s).However the music on the compilation has plus and negative aspects:Plus: - original 12" "Height Of Fighting", "Temptation 12"" (not the BIR version usually used), "Trouble" (sounds very clean and nice to hear again) and "Fascist Groove Thing" (including the original BEF ident (as per the original 12"). Great!Negative: - "We Live So Fast" is clearly taken from the Endless compilation, as it starts with the slower drum beats of the segued H17 Megamix outro, which then quickly speed up before the 12" overlays. So that's not from a master of the original mix! Then the Megamix itself - oh no, they cut it off abruptly at the end of a word, so there is no drum outro present atall! I know the drums were a Sanny X loop, not H17, but they are a much better outro than the amateurish cut here. Surely the guys could've added a bit of echo or reverb to make it sound smoother.....Also the sound quality/EQing varies a bit in places, so "Trouble" is very bright (it was a later track so that's not a real surprise) but "Penthouse.." (the album mix) sounds strangely flat compared to the rest. This is odd as it's readily available remastered, so should also sound quite punchy.Overall the tracks sound 'clean', as most would be from CD source anyway, and the track order is well thought out. As a purist I wanted to give this 5 stars, but the misuse of the H17 megamix (effecting 2 tracks) is arguably verging on sacrilege! If you haven't got Endless, or the older "Remixes" compilation, then this is still well worth getting (particularly if you like "Trouble"!). It is not a continuous mix like Endless, but separate tracks, so B&J have simply compiled it.
