unions for beginner
This is a tremendous book to serve as a guide to people who are unfamiliar with the labor movement. It is a very easy read. Fletcher is methodical in dismantling the widely held misperceptions and myths that many uneducated people hold regarding labor unions. If you are looking for a beginner's guide to the labor movement, this book is a perfect starting point. It will arm you with the right talking points for you to rebut your anti-union friend the next time he goes on one of his rants about "big labor" destroying our economy. If you are already familiar with labor, this book may not be for you. It is rather basic in it's arguments. I found that I did not learn much new from the book. It was telling me things I already knew, preaching to the choir, so to speak. Here's a great idea: Would make a perfect Christmas gift for that person on your list that watches too much Fox News.

An interesting insight into the pro-union ideology. Well written syntactically. Fletcher does make an honest attempt to represent and challenge counter arguments. However, his understanding of the civil-libertarian counter position is incorrect and misleading. Therefore, his refutations are not accurate, productive nor successful -- though he pompously claims a form of victory. This is ultimately deceptive as general readers also do not understand the ethical basis of the anti-government-enforced-union civil-libertarian position and are incorrectly informed of the premise. I am not entirely convinced this was intentionally deceptive (though it ultimately proves to be), I am more inclined to believe Fletcher was at the cutting edge of his understanding and just cannot fully absorb the opposition's motive. I quickly developed a sense of pity for the Author, as he seemed truly misinformed yet so deeply attached to system dying around him.I was, in the end, left mostly confounded at Fletcher's structural misunderstandings yet arrogant procession. But, this book offers a great window into how disparate the conceptual framework of the pro-union position truly is from anti-union-government-enforced-union.

This book lointsvrhe reader in the right direction in correcti A very valuable book during a time when unions are fighting to survive.

Dispelling the myths and lies promoted to undercut Union strength
The center-piece of the Neoliberalism agenda is the maximization of corporate profits. Worker solidarity hinders this objective. Within this context, we are witness to war of ideas in which disciples and followers of the neoliberal program promote a fictitious assault on labor unionism. The attack is based on myth, lies, and intentional misinformation meant to sway the public away from supporting labor solidarity. This attack is as old as the story of labor's struggle. Fletcher soundly repels the attack, providing clarity and truth in an easy to follow narrative. This book should be read by anyone interested in the plight of the declining American middle-class working family.

Why Labor Unions are important despite their imperfection
An excellent concise summary of some of the existential problems labor unions face in ensuring their continued existence in America. Many have been self-inflicted wounds by corrupt, racist or obsessively-politically-correct union leaders, not always at the hands of persons who are ideologically opposed to the existence of unions at all. But authentic democratic trade unions and the right to organize and bargain collectively are basic human rights with roots that can be traced to the bible. And if organized labor becomes extinct in America, this country will be greatly diminished by the loss.

The truth about unions.
Bill does an excellent job explaining how unions are misunderstood by workers, politicians, and the public. And how the media makes them appear to be big power structures that control our workers and the economy which is absolutely false. It's a must read for anyone interested in the truth about unions.
