Overall a good read
My daughter says: โThis book is filled with adventure, luck and horses. It does have some heavy and gory parts so I would only recommend it for 11 and up. Otherwise I really enjoyed it, Oyuna is brave and a great role model. The only con though that the beginning didnโt really hold my attention that much, however it gets a lot more intriguing as the book progressed. Overall a good read.

A girl, her horse and their incredable journey together!
A really enjoyed reading this book! I had orignally purchased this book for my daughter and surprisingly finished the book in 2 days.I main character Oyuna is very likeable, is a strong young woman despite of her crushed leg. She is a true horse whisper and chooses a remarkable horse that takes her on an incredable journey! I also like how the story takes place in a stable, with Oyuna being a happy grandmother who is passing on her story, love for horses and heritage on to her young granddaughter.Definately a wonderful read for your daughter, regardless to whether she is from China or not! Not to be a spoiler, but keep a box of kleenex close by for the last chapter!

Wonderful story
I'm so glad to see this book re-released. I purchased 13 used copies through so many people to get a classroom set. My students grade 6-7 LOVED this book. The author has a fantastic use of language, with challenging but understandable vocabulary. She creates real characters whom students even today can connect with. Her understanding of the past, geography and culture is superb. If you seek a good connection between history and literature this is a great find. I recommend the story for both kids and adults. I can't wait to introduce it to another set of kids!

It took a while for me to really want to read this book, but I did get into it. It is not as enthralling as some of her other books.

Great Historical Fiction book
My middle school girls and I read this as part of our home schooling. They loved the book so much I had to purchase this one in addition to the one in our curriculum so they could both have a copy! Historical fiction, story set in Mongolia during the reign of Kublai Khan.

Loved it!
I read this as a read-aloud to my 2 girls, aged 12 and 11. It started out a little slow, but really picked up. The girls didn't want me to stop reading. It really helped in understanding the culture and history of Mongolia.

Beautiful Mongolian horse story
I came across this book late in its publication life, after it had won a well-deserved American Library Association Award for young adults, and was immediately enchanted by the story of Oyuna, who disguises herself as a boy to stay with her beloved horse when soldiers come to conscript villagers for the Khan's army. You can almost taste the steppe in these pages, and even readers who are not horse lovers should enjoy Oyuna's bravery and her adventures in the fabled land of Kubilai Khan. It's the kind of book you want to keep on your shelf after finishing it, just so you can read it all over again.

An unusual heroine and the friends she makes when circumstances force her out of her home and family
Singular, strong, funny central character, good description of the stepped, interweaving of supernatural and a little history, well written too
