HDS 701, Norman Blake et al lives on
Thanks Hank for the quick service and for the service to my musical fix.I recently decided I needed to have this on CD and was very glad to see that I could get it from Mr. Deane via Amazon. I have the album that I purchased more than 40 years ago but my turntable is not functioning. I was fortunate to also have seen this ensemble at the Acedemy of Music in Philly and enjoyed the live show immensely. Great music! If you don't have this and or haven't had the pleasure of listening to this music, you probably owe it to yourself to change that and get this CD.

I really loved the bass playing on Morning Bugle
I was so excited when I found out this existed. I bought the John Hartford double CD with Morning Bugle, which has famous jazz bassist Dave Holland, and was totally blown away. I was previously way in to jazz and now I mostly listen to bluegrass. I really loved the bass playing on Morning Bugle, which is mostly straight bluegrass bass, but with enough jazz sensibility and chops to take it a little higher in a very interesting way. So I found the Norman Blake and company album by looking for more bluegrass with Dave Holland playing bass.To me, this album was a disappointment. It is not bluegrass at all, rather more of a jazz record. But aside from Dave Holland's playing, and a few exceptions, most of the playing doesn't quite make it for me. I guess if you took the more recent giants like Bela Fleck or Noam Pikelney, Stuart Duncan, Brian Sutton or Chris Eldridge, and Chris Thiele and asked them to make a jazz record, it might come together better. What you have here is a record of pioneers pushing the boundaries of acoustic music with bluegrass instruments. Just didn't do it for me, but I have plenty of respect for what these guys were trying to do, and for the individuals playing.

Superb
All of these guys with the exception of Dave Holland were regular players at The Exit/In in Nashville in the early to mid 1970's. All great musicians. I have the original vinyl, but wanted the cd to put on my iPod so I could play it in the car.

I'm happy to finally have this one on CD because I ...
I first heard this album played on 70's free form FM radio while driving to work. After work I ran to buy the LP and it stayed on heavy rotation in my living room for months. A milestone of the new-grass genre. Very naturally recorded performances by world-class players. Dave Holland blends perfectly with this group of Nashville heavyweights. I'm happy to finally have this one on CD because I missed the original CD release.

For anyone into the bluegrass/jazz crossover, this album is a must.
One of my all time favorite albums. Have had since college. Lost my CD so I was grateful to find it.
