What he says and how he says it
Everything I have read by Robert Bringhurst makes me want to read more. Makes me wish I would never finish his books and the wonder of having such an insightful and poetic wordsmith to teach me about his craft and introduce me to fellow craftsmen -- particularly the tribal voices so long silenced. To imagine not being able to speak one's own language is to appreciate Bringhurst's championing of those who turn back the pages and echo the old voices. His own voice is brilliance piercing the darkness.

I enjoyed these essays by Robert Bringhurst
I enjoyed these essays by Robert Bringhurst. Each essay a contemplative practice unto itself. Highly recommended for anyone interested in language and the primary need for expression that all creatures share.“Poetry is language used with an awareness of the poverty of language…. gauge…. Poetry remembers that language is shaped air; it remembers ashes to ashes, dust to dust, wind to wind; it knows we don’t own what we know. It knows the world is, after all, unnameable, so it listens hard before it speaks, and wraps that listening into the linguistic act.’ “

Lookout, author a Radical Thinker
Bringhurst is fantastic. Writing about his writing is daunting, but the Barry Lopez quote on the backcover is spot-on. His typographic book is worth reading. His essays, ostensibly on this-and-that, are full of gifts and surprises whether you are a curious soul or a mystified worker bee. This book is a great place to start.

Genius, Elegant
Robert Bringhurst is one of the best writers ever, in my opinion. The Elements of Typographic Style is a terrific read, even if you care nothing for typography or book design (beware, you may after reading it).

Amazing breadth
Bringhurst is a polymath to be envied. He writes about language, poetry, typography, art, translation, Native American culture, nature and much more with erudition, passion, and elan.

Simply a beautiful book - these are things which have been on my mind (that's my personal experience, which is the only experience I have). This book truly should be required reading for everyone going into university - OR JUST FOR LIVING. To me Robert Bringhurst is a great intellectual whose work needs much much much wider readership. Him and John Ralston Saul are two modern thinkers, poets, writers whose work deserves to stand with any of the sacred Western canon.
