SECRET OF CRICKLEY HALL DVD from BBC
Funny how opinions differ!!! I loved this 3 parter. A cracking ghost story with some fine acting and no overdone SFX. Suranne Jones and Tom Ellis are on top form as the parents suffering from the disapearence of their son. Douglas Henshal and Sarah Smart are quite terrifying as the cruel owners of the orphanege "Crickley Hall". Sarah Smart even manages to be a little bit sexy with all her evilness. Susan Lynch and Donald Sumpter are just right as 2 people who come to help "ghost hunt". Let's not forget Maisie Williams and (I think) Pixie Davies as the 2 daughters. Some very moody photography, some rather graphic cruelty and a terrific 3rd episode make this one of my favourite genre stories. P.S. A word of WARNING...If you do not know what happens in ep 3 do NOT watch the trailer at the end of ep 2....Whoever made that should be shot. A good price, good subtitles - Well worth getting.

Good TV Drama
I thought the story was very engrossing and compelling, though it was at times very dark and I wouldn't recommend very young children watching it. Suranne Jones and Tom Ellis were good leads and the child actors were exceptional. The conclusion of the DVD was good and was appropriate for teens and young adults. I love ghosts stories and I thought this film considering it was made for TV was really good. It is has compelled me to look for the orginal story written by James Herbert and reading other reviews the film and book had different endings. Do recommend the DVD if you like a ghost story.

I thought that it was a good adaption overall - the best and most chilling episode being the first one, in my opinion. However, as it progressed, it began to deviate from the source material - slightly at first and then wildly towards the end. Without spoiling it for everyone, the end isn't even remotely like the book's ending and is far too sickly sweet.Having said that, the performances brilliant. Tom Ellis; Suranne Jones and a pre-GOT Maisie Williams lead the cast in the present day, and Douglass Henshall and Sarah Smart are menacing in their roles as the menacing; abusive Cribben siblings, Augustus and Magda. Sarah Smart brings a sultry seductiveness to the role of Magda Cribben in a way not portrayed in the book, and it works really well. Olivia Cook also shines in her role of trainee teacher Nancy Linnet, and her desperate (and ultimately futile) struggle to expose Augustus Cribben as the bullying; abusive tyrant that he is will have you glued to the screen.Overall, I would say that it's worth checking out if you're a fan of haunted house stories. Fans of the book may be irritated by the source material deviations, though.

Depressing
A lot of supernatural with modern life It had my blood boiling how the poor "past" children was treated I' love to to take that vile cane to the orphanage owners Vicars wrapped up in what they wanted to see NOT what happening A modern Mother so debilitated by grief and guilt with a useless none supporting husband I thought she'd loose the plot completely So many secrets really sad how long the guy waited for his love only to find her remains in the well Over all a VERY depressing movie The only happy outcome the dear little boy who bore the brunt of cruelty survived had a family of his own and lived to old age

Fantastic Adaption
I thoroughly enjoyed James Herbert's book - a real page turner - 631 pages which i read in one week i remember. This adaption is superb and any changes actually add to the story. My brother and i were so impressed. Book or TV adaption? It is a very close call to say which one is better. Bravo!

SUPERB
I'd already watched this on tv but had to get the DVD. It draws you in from the off and keeps you hooked throughout. Although sad and at times, a bit scary, it's so well done. Brilliantly acted by all. One hell of a story you'll want to see again and again.

What a let-down
Well, that's three hours of my life I'm never going to get back again!Normally I'd watch Suranne Jones even if she were only reading out the telephone directory, especially if she's co-starring with Sarah Smart. But what a farrago of old tosh! No chemistry between husband and wife, central casting creepy vicars (two of them!), plot holes (who on earth cooked the enormous last supper for the kids - surely not the loony cane-wielder?!), and Hammer House of Horror fake rain.Mustn't be totally negative - the two child actors were excellent - better than most of the adults. In short, save your money!
