The Harmonists [DVD]

A brilliant film set in Berlin in the twenties, and followed the doings of the famous male singing group "The Comedian Harmonists" who were the toast of Europe in the twenties.The film includes some of their original songs. they were eventually muzzled by Goebbels and his complete control of the arts and music during the nazi era, and ultimately they were hounded into oblivian by the fact that several of them were jewish during the purge. The film is black and white with english subtitles, which does not detract at all. Another sad account of the paralysing effect on the arts and free expression during that time, and should be a lesson for us today.

A true story, remembered by some old folks who experienced it first hand - at least to listen to. The film is lit by the wonderful sounds the close-harmony group that sings at its center. Though several Jews were among its members and family, so beloved was the group tby the German public and audiences abroad that for a long time the Nazis felt constrained from touching them. When finally they were warned that the Jewish contingent must be dropped, the group disbanded instead. All the members managed to get out of Germany. Not one was arrested or or interned. It ends on a bittersweet note, but nothing can take away from the joy of the music.

Arrived a day earlier than the expected date, which I'm happy about. I saw this film a couple of years ago and I simply loved it. Language options are German and French and captions/subtitles come in english. I'm glad to finally own this wonderful piece of film after so many years! The Comedian Harmonists were truly a wonderful harmonic group that sadly separated due to WWII.

If you have a standard DVD player, it’s unlikely it will play the movie in this format. Moreover, this is an independent seller, so the usual easy Amazon return is not an option. I’ve heard the movie is interesting if you can get it to play.

Absolute fine Art and remake of the Original Comedian Harmonists. Their story and Music brings youback in their time and world of Entertainment. One could believe that is the original, so beautiful the costumes,hair style, background and behavior of people during that time.This story is not always funny at all, there conflicts involved, dramas and altogether emotional too.If you love good old sounds, without electronic make up, the real wonderful, romantic kind of music, that wouldbe thee movie to see. Most performers have not had to make life or death decisions related to their careers. Imagine if you were a successful entertainer in Nazi Germany, and you happen to be Jewish. Such is the gist of this 1997 film about a six member singing German group, the Comedian Harmonists (1928-1934). The group was successful in Europe before WW II, and even performed in the United States. Among the group, three members were either Jewish or of Jewish decent, and one member had married a Jewish woman. Their success increased almost parallel with the Nazi’s extreme treatment of Jews. This conflict presented a dilemma to the group, as well as the authorities. What to do, what to do . . .This story is probably unfamiliar to other countries outside of Europe. As biopics go, it was refreshing to come upon a story as unique as this one. It is a German produced film with English subtitles but does not diminish the effective acting. The performances are fun to watch and feature actual recordings of the group. All in all, an enjoyable film that not only entertains, but might also stimulate some discussion.

This movie affected me so deeply that I can barely write about it. All the movies about war on a big scale stun us with their brutality and horror. This movie shows us destruction of young lives on a small personal scale with dreams abandoned and the future deferred..Beautifully acted and photographed. Superlative music.

Al no tener subtitulos, solo audio alemán, he visto dos veces la película y me gustó más la 2ª vez. No conocía al famoso grupo de cantantes (humorísticos) a capella, y todas las canciones son las suyas auténticas. Llegaron a la cima e incluso triunfaron en EEUU (allí, en inglés). He descubierto el ambiente berlinés de la belle époque y he revivido los acontecimientos posteriores, de ahí el regusto algo amargo que deja, pero es parte de la historia

L'histoire, les chants, l'ambiance, tout est réuni pour garder ce film dans sa vidéothèque et le regarder régulièrement ! j'adore !!!

Über den Film wurde sicher schon genug geschrieben, deswegen beschränke ich mich in meiner Rezension alleine auf die technischen Aspekte der Blu-ray im Vergleich zur DVD, was Ihnen helfen soll sich zu entscheiden, ob sich ein Upgrade lohnt.Diese Veröffentlichung habe ich lange herbeigesehnt. Comedian Harmonists wurde bisher auf DVD nur in sehr bescheidener Qualität veröffentlich und vor allem nur mit seitlich beschnittenem Bildformat. Etliche Szenen wurden ihrer ursprünglichen Bildkomposition beraubt, oft verschwanden seitlich halbe Körper oder Gesichter aus dem Bild. Noch dazu war die DVD nicht einmal anamorph. Mir als Cineast bereitet es regelrecht Schmerzen so etwas sehen zu müssen (allerdings bekomme ich auch Schreikrämpfe wenn ich vertikal gefilmte Handyvideos sehe). Dies hat nun Dank der Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung ein Ende! Endlich kann man diesen wunderbaren Klassiker der deutschen Kino-Neuzeit im korrekten Bildformat 2,35:1 bewundern. Aber das ist nicht die einzige Besserung beim Bild. Die Titeleinblendungen im Vorspann wurden seinerzeit für die DVD-Veröffentlichung neu positioniert um in das beschnittene Bild zu passen und durch einen schlichten Schrifttyp ersetzt. In der Blu-ray Fassung sieht man nun die schönen Originalbuchstaben so platziert wie es mal ursprünglich vorgesehen war.Aber an der Bildqualität hat sich noch einiges mehr getan: Hinter dem kurzen Cover-Slogan "Digital remastered" (grammatikalisch richtig müsste es "digitally" heißen) steckt tatsächlich eine erstaunlich saubere Abtastung, befreit von analogen Dropouts. Stellenweise ist ein sehr feines Filmkorn zu sehen, aber fast nur in mittelhellen Stellen. Dies unterstütze den filmischen Look aber eher als dass es schadet. Offensichtlich ist man hier sehr vorsichtig mit digitalen Filtern umgegangen und so der originalen Präsentation sehr nahe gekommen. Die Farben sind sehr natürlich, oft sogar quietschebunt. Etwas, was man bei Filmen, die in der Epoche spielen, selten sieht. Gerade einige Innenaufnahmen in Clubs sowie die Szenen im Freibad sehen besonders frisch aus, was zu der unbeschwerten Zeit am Anfang der Karriere der Comedian Harmonists besonders gut passt. Bei der DVD war das Bild blass und braunstichig. Die Schärfe befindet sich auf einem sehr ordentlichen Niveau, kommt nicht ganz an jenes einer modernen digitalen Produktion ran, aber dafür, dass der Film schon 20 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat, ist es beeindruckend. Jedes weitere Nachschärfen hätte nur zu Verschlimmbesserungen geführt. Ganz klar: Dieser Film hat nie besser ausgesehen und selbst auf großen Bildschirmen (und Leinwänden) ist er jetzt eine Augenweide.Der Ton erklingt nun in DTS-HD Master Audi 5.1. Die DVD war in Dolby Digital 5.1, was aber abgesehen von der leisen Abmischung kein großer Nachteil war. Hier hat die Blu-ray die Nase aber auch (knapp) vorne, ist der DTS-Ton doch etwas räumlicher und im Tieftonbereich druckvoller (Ben Beckers Stimme!). Die leichte Asynchronität der DVD wurde auf der BD behoben. Bei der Verständlichkeit der Dialoge gibt es bei beiden Medien nichts zu meckern.Zu meckern gibt es höchstens bei der Ausstattung der Blu-ray. Denn nicht ein einziges Feature hat es als Bonusmaterial auf die Scheibe geschafft. Sehr bedauerlich, hatte die DVD doch neben einem Making of, ein paar Filmografien als Texttafeln (in der Anfangszeit der DVD nichts ungewöhnliches) und zwei Trailern zum Film eine für damalige Verhältnisse ordentliche Auswahl an Extras. Immerhin besitzt die Blu-ray ein Wendecover. Überhaupt gefällt mir das Cover sehr gut, es wurde auch ins Menü übertragen. Tatsächlich gibt es im Disc-Menü nur zwei Auswahl-Punkte: Filmstart und Szenenauswahl. Es gibt also auch keine Untertitel oder alternative Tonspuren.FAZIT:Auch wenn die Ausstattung sehr bescheiden (bzw. nicht vorhanden) ist, in technischer Hinsicht stellt die Blu-ray einen Quantensprung dar und präsentiert diesen jungen Klassiker endlich in würdiger Qualität. Erstmals ist es ein wahres Vergnügen die Comedian Harmonists von Joseph Vilsmaier im Heimkino zu genießen.

I never saw this film in a theatre, but bought a VHS copy second-hand several years ago. I was delighted when I was able to buy a DVD version, because this is a remarkable movie made about a real male singing group in the 1930's in Germany, who ran into increasing harassment by the Nazi regime before the start of World War II. If that brief description sounds odd, just see the movie for yourselves.... you're in for a real surprise.With great pleasure in May 2012, when I was in Austria, I discovered that there is now a New Harmonists Group on the European stage - I have not yet been able to see or hear this revival group, but will certainly do so if and when I can.
