Aliens for Breakfast (A Stepping Stone Book)

Easy read.
It didn’t seem to keep the kids attention. They lost interest by chapter 4

Maybe for kindergartners or first graders.
The plot of this book could have been quite interesting, but it fell short on many counts The characterization was woefully flat. I could not engage with any of the characters. The storyline was simple with one major protagonist, a sidekick, and the protagonist with no subplots to complicate things, therefore easy to follow for very young readers just beginning their “real” book reading journey. That’s about all I can say for it. The plot was silly and not well executed. The few twists were too easily overcome (even for young readers) making the tale a bit tedious and boring. As far as story content I might offer this to up to 7-year-olds so they can practice reading longer books with content that may possibly engage them, since their sense of humor is quite basic, and learn to answer comprehension questions on a very simple book, learn to look up answers and determine their own conclusions. They may even come up with better answers to “what do you think will happen next” than the book does. Given that the content is appropriate for 5-7 year olds, some of the words are quite difficult - more for the upper ages of what the book professes to be written for, which are 6 to 9 year olds. (tentacles, nourishment, unimportant, materialized, etc.) Perhaps 20 years ago, this may have been a fun sci fi read. Even now, it may be a good introduction to the genre for beginning chapter book readers or very reluctant readers. I, myself, would hate to sit through it. The one part that may get the readers intrigued is when the stakes are upped when Richard is starting to melt and will continue to melt unless he and the alien get the bad guy. The illustrations almost seemed to fade in the background light pencil or something with immature sketches that a young person may have come up with. Yeah, I guess I’ll admit it would be a cute, funny read for kindergartners or first graders. I can see them looking in their cereal boxes in the morning looking for an alien. Older than that, I wouldn’t think so. I think this review is as illogical and haphazard as the book was!

My son enjoyed this book. I was hoping it would keep him engaged enough to buy the other two that go with it thoygh and he didn't really seem too interested in continuing the series.

Engaging
This book was adorable. Book it for my 7 year old stepson who said “reading was boring” he found it entertaining and I also found myself excited to hear the next chapter. Will be ordering more.

Great first chapter book for kids who like sci-fi stories!
My five year old son loved this, it was engaging enough that he was able and keen to read it himself despite being more difficult than he's used to. The only slight difficulty was that lots of words were split over two lines with a dash which he hadn't encountered before but he soon got used to it. Perfect first chapter book for kids who like sci-fi stories.
