My 7-8yr old DEVOURED this series!!!
Before I started homeschooling my daughter, I used to volunteer at the library where she attended public school. I was appalled by the poor literature on the book shelves and became acutely aware of the reason American children have become such poor readers. After that experience, I was determined to find great literature for her to read.I realized, though, that I had to find kindling to start that life-long burning desire to read.A friend gave us, "Mandie and the Secret Tunnel" (Book #1--not volume 1) and she was absolutely hooked! She's reading volume 11 now... this is the last volume before the last book, "Mandie and the College Days." She doesn't want the series to be over, so, she's reading this last volume VERY SLOWLY (as opposed to a volume a week!!)The only thing that was a bit of a challenge for my daughter (she read Volumes 1-9 while she was 7yrs old.. so, it may not be as much of a challenge for older girls) was reading the broken english of the african-american and indian characters of the book---after all, it is set in the late 1800's. (I read those parts to her on occasion when she first started reading the book, but, it didn't take long for her to internalize those character's accents).I read another review that erroneously stated Mandie was "flirty." No. I have to tell you that is simply not the case. Her friend, Polly, however, is....flirtatious. But, not Mandie. While emotional and sentimental, she is more of a thoughtful & adventurous character. The series is a Christian series--thus, the flirtatious & romantic parts are light and innocent---absolutely NOTHING that would render the necessity of worry on the part of the parent. To give you an example of a "romantic" scene that made my daughter's cheeks turn bright red and screech with laughter, was when Mandie's friend Joe asked her to "marry him.... someday."What little girl doesn't love romance AND adventure? The Mandie Series gets 5++++ stars from this parent. It is a series that I HIGHLY recommend!!!

Great book collection for pre teens!
My 12 year old daughter loves these books. I love that they have good messages and morals, and they keep kids interested. She can't put them down! I wish I could find more books like this that I can be comfortable with her reading.

Mandie collection volume 8
The third story the best with all the secret business, that Mandie tried to unravel. At the end Mandie was so into the mystery she forgot it was her birthday.

Good moral stories
My daughter thouroughly enjoys this series! It is well written and believable too. Each story contains a mystery, some are real mysteries to solve and some are little girls imaginations dreaming things up. They get involved without acting/behaving like adults. They use the reasoning skills of an 10 to 12 year old child. They are all considered funny with a good moral story in each one. I would highly recommend these.
