Iron Thunder
Author Avi has once again created an exciting, story for readers of all ages! He has clearly researched the facts to bring us a historical fiction account of what it must have been like to serve on one of the most famous boats in American history. Through the eyes of young Tom Carroll, a young fatherless lad, the reader is led through the building, launching, and fighting of the famous ironclad ship. This would make an excellent book for classrooms to read while studying the American Civil War! The actual photos, pictures, and maps give truth and background to the story.

11-year-old son loved it!
My fifth grade son absolutely loves this book! He had to read it for school, and while normally he doesn't get excited about school reading, this one really held his attention.

Good Balance of War Topic and Low Readability for the Classroom
As a teacher, I was able to use this book, which is at about a 3.5 grade equivalent, to give lower readers access to books about war. Usually books about war are written at a higher level, so this was a great find for me.

My son had this a 6th grade summer read. It was a an easy book, the setting of the civil war married his studies from 5th grade and the story was relevant to his age group.
