Super impressed
I bought a cheap,($40) methane detector to find leaks in an old natural gas pipeline running across my farm and did have some luck finding the large leaks but once I put this one to work I found at least a dozen the previous detector missed.Without spending thousands it’s pretty hard finding a better, more sensitive detector. The cheap model detected a min. 50 ppm methane. This detector will detect 5ppm methane. That’s huge! Also this one detects methane in the air 3-4 feet off the ground where as the cheap one did not.

Get the expensive model (CGD900) not the cheap one!
I first bought the PNG1 gas detector and the thing hardly worked. I set the stove on low to see if it would beep and it wouldn't even beep if it was against the gas outlet. After setting the stove on full blast and pushing the device RIGHT where the gas flows out it FINALLY beeped! Well that's not too useful when you're about to pass out from the fumes. I would never ever use the PNG1. It's so useless that you would be better off using a napkin to see a gush of air. The CGD900 however works well and is quite sensitive. It was able to detect very small amounts of natural gas. I think the reviews on here are for all of the products. So a lot of good ones I assume are for the more expensive devices.

Excellent Product
It found the smallest gas leaks. It has a super sensitive mode to find the smallest leaks. I detected leaks that were nearly invisible to the soap bubble test. It's a great buy and does an excellent job cross checking other gas leak test methods.

More expensive, but safety is worth it
Just got done using this for a gas log installation, the meter is sensitive and easy to use. Much more confident in this one than the $25 cheap models that people always complain about.

I borrowed one of these units from a friend for use in a repair of the LP gas pipes in an older house. It does everything I need and I have placed it on my "to buy" list -- I need to have one on hand without bothering anyone else. With that, two minor quibbles: 1) It takes 11-12 seconds to to warm up rather than the "less than 10 seconds" given in the specs. It might be because of old batteries. Off and immediate on again makes no difference in the warm-up time, so it appears the time is not really warm up, but reloading the sensor.. It's OK to leave it on and beeping from one test location to another. 2) The digital readout is difficult to read in a bright light environment such as outdoors. It is sometimes necessary to shade the readout with the hand in order to see the reading.A curiosity -- I got a significant "leak" reading when the sensor was close to an ordinary kitchen paper towel. Curious what kind of gas was being emitted from the paper.
