Blanche goes on vacation with a couple and their children along with her sister’s kids that she is raising. This is a resort that was built and run by African American people. There, Blanche faces colorism. Blanche is trying to keep the kids from becoming like the people of the resort as well as investigating who killed the mean, blackmailing girl who lives there. This is an interesting and informing book that I enjoyed reading.

I live in a world where children are so tuned into the shades of the color of their skins that everything in their existences are affected. Ms. Neely has given, through Blanche, a way for me to see through my children's eyes and hearts. Blanche is strong and still vulnerable; fearless, practical, yet still hopeful. These wonderful mysteries are the stage on which Blanche shows us her world, her reactions to it, and the actions she takes (or doesn't) as a result. Blanch humbles me, and strengthens me. As she untangles the details of the death of a 'hateful' woman, she discovers a community of people who aspire to be something they are not so badly that they're lives are as pale as the society they seek to emulate. The possible murderers pile up, and as Blanche sorts the connections she is feeling, an aspiring suitor tempts her hope a little too much. The solution is not all she uncovers. Perhaps you, too, as you follow her 'sleuthing', will find in her voice a greater understanding of this tangled, emotional skein that we call life. Enjoy.

I believe that Black Lives Matter and have made a pledge to fill my library with books by excellent black authors. It was already half full, but my search led me to this author. The Blanche series is delightful--well written, well-plotted and thoughtful in communicating the repression and oppression experienced by black people. I will be reading more!

Barbara Neely's Blanche Among the Talented was a pleasant surprise for me. As a woman of color writing about the experiences of women of color she is blunt and outspoken about the racism and class divides in America. As a white woman who has felt this factor in life here, I think she calls it like it is. Ms. Neely does spare us brutal endings and let's Blanche solve the mysteries and get her own back. Real life is not like that, but I am happy for her that she has developed this character and published several books -- all entertaining, in which she does make clear what we all know, we haven't made much progress since the 60s. Racism and sexism are still rampant in America. At least we have had Obama as our president for 2 terms. That is a step forward.

I loved it. I am a mystery fan and this one hit the spot.? It was complex and had a surprise ending. What fun. I can’t wait to finish the series. Then I will start on her short stories.

Read this book to get a clear picture of life of a dark-skinned woman. Have your teenagers read it, too. There are many life lessons here besides a good mystery tale. We need a book like this to help change minds of those who look down on people who have a certain skin color.

Finally a heroine I can relate to. No, I'm not a maid. But here is a fictional real woman. Not slender despite eating donuts, no rich friend, no dude just being a doormat for her. She has two kids and all the doubt we all have. And the relationship between her and employers mirrors a lot of us. The writing is a little choppy but will give it a couple more books before final judgement. Kudos!

I certainly enjoyed this book. I'm a white senior woman and found this book full of understandings that a black female deals with daily.I didn't realize the difference of the blackness of skin was an issue in black culture.This is my second book in the Blanche White series, I'm a big fan!I enjoyed the storyline so much and all the characters.👍👍👍

Very much enjoyed this novel and the series will be on my reading list for sure. I really enjoyed the narrative and the sub plot .
