Reviving Ophelia 25th Anniversary Edition: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls

I read this years ago and saved my copy until my daughter was old enough to read it. I then had another daughter and now that she's old enough to read it, I bought the 25th edition. So glad to see that this has had the longevity it so deserves. Every woman should read it.

Anyone and everyone dealing with teenage girls should read this book. I know this book was written a while ago but it is still relevant today. If you have a young girl in your life even if they aren’t in their teenage years yet this is a book you should read. If you just beginning to deal with teenage girls Or think you’re going to deal with teenage girls you should read this book. I have given more copies of this book away than I can even remember. Read this book.

What a great book! I would recommend any one who is interest in adolescent health to read this

The original text was wonderful when it came out, and helped me in understanding the women around me. That same text, if unedited, would be nearly worthless today. The pressures on girls in 2020, and the sources of those pressures, are so different now. So Mary Pipher et al went back to the well, talking with dozens of girls about their experience in an Internet-ruled world with mandatory cell phones. These were one-off interviews in most (all?) cases, so they don’t reflect the long-term trajectories of these girls’ lives, but they suffice to allow an intelligent comparison of girlhood in 1959 (from Pipher’s own experience), 1994 (from the original book), and the modern day.I was struck by how many things have gotten better in the last 25 years. More stable families, less drug and alcohol abuse, fewer eating disorders. And the problems wrought by the Internet are severe, but at least we know where they’re coming from, which gives us a chance to fight them.The original was an easy 5 stars. This revision is more like 4.5 but I’m rounding up.

Shared stories about girls being raised in today’s wAmerican m culture with modern norms and values. This book sheds a needed awareness of the challenges American adolescent girls face in today’s culture. Understanding the adversities the 90’s raised girls faced with the sexualization by MTV and rap music makes readers aware how easy it it for girls to be indoctrinated and loose themselves.

This is such a fabulous insightful book if you’re raising daughters. I read it back in the 90’s for a stepdaughter and am now rereading it as I raise my 15 y/o daughter. I truly cannot recommend it enough to get seriously valuable insights about girls / daughters and the struggles they go through every day. It’s one of those books that I keep on my bedside table bc I’m constantly referencing it to re-read something that really stuck with me. One of the best books I’ve read, and I’ve read a lot of developmental books in this genre.

As a mother who was a teenager when Reviving Ophelia was first published, I appreciate how the authors rely on interviews with girls in the 1990s (when I was a teenager) AND 2019 so I can better understand how the life of a teenage girl has changed since I was growing up but also how it hasn't changed. This anniversary edition is 25 years in the making, and that's what sets this apart from the typical books that focus on single topics such as just social media or bullying. As I read this book, I think of my own childhood and how that framed my approach to motherhood and my relationship with my own daughter. Click "Buy Now" and read this book!
