Introduction to Chemistry for Biology Students, An

Easy to follow--The programmed approach in this book presents the information in a workbook format. It consists of series of numbered problems building on information learned in the preceding problems. Answers for each these problems are located in the margins of each page. I find this type of format such an easy way to learn and a lot of fun. I only wish that more books used this approach.Over thirty years ago, when I was taking biology in college, the 2nd edition of this book (134 pages) was required to supplement our main text book. I liked the book so much that I kept it all these years. When my own children took high school chemistry, they used it as an extra resource guide. Fast forward to today, I recently thought about this book and thought that it would be a fun way to relearn chemistry and resharpen some of my critical thinking skills. My 2nd edition copy was in such worn condition and written in many times over. I thought that it would be great if I could start with a new fresh copy, so I checked on Amazon and was delighted to find that a 9th expanded addition (334 pages-covering more topics) was now available. I decided to order it and have thoroughly enjoyed working through it ever since.This book's easy to follow format has definitely stood the test of time. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in taking Chemistry, biology and/or related courses.

This has mostly beginners stuff. AP students who got 4 or 5 in the college board exam will not learn much.

This book is really good if you have not taken chemistry at all. I did not take chemistry when I was in high school, and now I am working on pre-requisites to become a RN and chemistry is needed for the program. Read the beginning of the book and use the tabs provided to block out the answers and work through it, then check your answers to see where you went wrong.One of my friends recommended this book to me and I purchased it yes it works and I never to chemistry in high school it makes so, so much sense to get it a really big help.

This book is small (in size) and the intro says you are to finish it within two weeks of starting chemistry class. It does cover the basic stuff pretty well, but its a one use workbook.

This book is clearly written and well organized. It presents concepts in language that is easy to understand. The diagrams are clear. The book leads you thorugh complex topics step by step as you answer the text questions. I disagree with the reviewer who stated that this book is only for review once you know the material. This book presents material and then tests your understanding of the material. You should cover this book in order from Chapter ONE through the end as later chapters build on material learned in previous ones.If you need a text to teach you basic chemistry for a Biology class, you can't go wrong with this one.

This book was part of the required for list for a class I am taking. I have some background in chemistry, but not nearly enough for the class. I found this book was really easy to use and explained concepts very step by step. Some of the examples/work problems are things that I would be able to use in my 6th grade science classroom (that I teach). This book breaks down some more difficult concepts and leads you through how solve/understand them wonderfully.I would suggest this book to anyone who is struggling in chemistry or someone who needs some chemistry background but doesn't want to take a whole class.

I have no chemistry background and it's required for a human bio class (for non-medical students) class. It's not for the hard core biology majors, but simply and easily goes through the very basics of chemistry in understandable language. You mask the answers and the whole book instructs and quizzes. It does it so easily you don't get discouraged by getting many wrong answers. I wish I'd had this before I took my previous science class!

This is an excellent review for people who need to know the essential chemistry for a general biology course. It has clear examples and leads the student through complicated ideas efficiently to arrive at answers to commonly asked questions on biology exams. The illustrations and wording are commensurate with beginning vocabulary of high school to first year college students. A definite plus when studying for this complicated and often overwhelming subject in a first year college course.

I crashed bio-chem with no prior knowledge in Chemistry and this book was a lifesaver.

This book is a bit simpler than I expected, but it made for excellent bedtime reading and filled in a few of the gaps I haas in my understanding - definitely worth the purchase.

A very good, concise overview. With the exception of a few typos the book gives a clear and easily accessible introduction to the main topics. The method of exposition is particularly effective in self-assessment.
