Flavorful-nutritious-fast-simple-cheep recipes for first time cooks living away from home.
This is a great book for the new to cooking away from home for the first timers. It is a usful tool to help College age peeps stay home and cook nutruiious food, and out of the fast food-pizza joints that usually surround a college campus. I has everything you need to know, It is laid out so it is super easy to read and the recipes are simple and nutritious. There are Vegetarian and Vegan options available for those that don't eat animal products or secretions. This book also provides some good-simple recipes made with a variety of whole grains, along with recipes that include tofu as a main ingredient. Chapter one is all about setting up a simple kitchen with the realistic tools you will need to be successful. There is a simple glossary of fundamental cooking terms to read through for an understanding of the skills needed to navigate basic recipes Also included is descriptions of common herbs and spices and some their most frequent companions. There are substitutions for some not so healthy ingredients, and charts to help make measurement conversions just in case you need help with that. This is a really nice book. I would give this as a gift to someone going off to school or moving away from home for the first time. All in all a really nice well thought simple book to help young people make better dietary choices that they can live by, and stay out of the fast food places-spending money they don't have and eating processed fatty foods.

Great for people of all ages
I am an older student, but I still found myself falling victim to the typical poor eating habit of fast food or take out all the time. That is the sentiment with most of my classmates, including other adults my age and older. This book has a lot of easy common sense recipes, and some really great different ideas. I honestly have yet to cook anything from it, but I did read it cover to cover. The beginning is full of valuable information about the basics of cooking that everyone should know, as people are cooking less and eating out more. Everything is simple to make and contains whole ingredients for the most part.I gave it 4 stars because there were a few recipes in there that are not so healthy as far as calorie and fat content. I recall seeing something that had about 1000 calories a serving, that's TOO much for a "healthy" meal. The book talks about spices and herbs in the beginning, but it also focuses on saving money since college students are typically on a limited budget. I think it would have been cute if it had incorporated growing your own herbs. It's simple, money saving, and can be done indoors with little space. I still cannot believe how much they charge for a few sprigs of Rosemary or Basil at the grocery store!

Pretty helpful
I have been looking for a cookbook like this for some time. I am a grad student without much time or money. This book had some helpful idea for foods that I need to keep in my kitchen, and some simple recipes. The trouble with being a student is that it is very easy to fall into the habit of just grabbing fast food on a regular basis, but that will end up costing you more in the end: money and health. The down side of this book is that there are no pictures, and some of the recipes are actually quite complex. I was also hoping for more easy crock pot meals. While not perfect, I found this book to pretty helpful for a single graduate student with very little time and on a tight budget.

Good for what it is
It is what it is. For that, it gets four stars. Don't expect anything mind-blowing but do expect the recipes in here to be totally doable for a novice. It is full of easy-to-make, simple dishes that can help a newer cook make decent meals and improve as he or she becomes more comfortable in the kitchen. Some favorites: honey dijon salmon, apple chicken with mushrooms, sweet orange chickenI was not at all a fan of the lime-garlic shrimp and the baked tunaIf you are looking to save money, learn to cook and eat a little healthier, buy this book. It has made learning to cook much easier via practice with simple, solid recipes and the fact that it is all in one place instead of spread out among various internet bookmarks.

Nice emphasis on health and small size
As someone who had never had to cook for themselves full time before, I really liked the introductory chapters explaining different cooking tools and what ingredients to always have on hand. After that though, it turned out to be the same as any other cookbook. Nice recipes but a bit overdone when trying to cook for one person and thus limited on what one has on hand. Sure, one can plan ahead when buying but will have to repeat recipes several times in short order to use ingredients before they go bad.I recommend the product but more strongly recommend you look at the book in a local bookstore first.

It's great for people like him who have NO idea how ...
I bought this cookbook for my boyfriend who just moved into a new place and cannot cook. This book has been keeping him (and me) fed and taught him a lot about basic cooking. It's great for people like him who have NO idea how to cook, and people like me that don't know what to cook. The recipes are simple and occasionally lack flavour, but if you know how to season you'll be okay. If you can't cook, you probably won't notice the seasoning thing anyways. The section on how to stock a kitchen is very informative.

Helped me through College
This is a great book for anyone leaving the nest and heading to their first year of college. I would say most meals are "Dorm Room Compatible" (although some require a full kitchen). The book is very straight forward, not a lot of pictures, and provides healthy meals at an affordable costs. One of my biggest complaints of cookbooks are that they usually require you to go out and buy exotic ingredients that end up sitting on your pantry shelf after the meal. The Healthy College Cookbook cooks up some very tasty meals with readily available ingredients and spices. On top of that, it goes into the nutritional content of each meal. This is of course helpful in avoiding the common overindulgences that college often presents.

Yum
There are so many delicious recipes in this book. I went through only half of it and I've flagged a bunch of recipes to try. The only thing I wish was different is that there were pictures. All the recipes are simple and don't involve anything too expensive. Perfect for the college student. Looking forward to starting to cook!

Awesomed!
Being an expat whose cooking skills are worse than a toddler, I am pretty amazed at what I am able to do with this book. Simple, neat and effective! Highly recommended if you are looking for a quick hack eating lifestyle; high on health and low on time.

I can't cook
I'm useless in the kitchen so this book was a huge help. I'm retarded when it comes to choosing NON-junkfood at the grocery store. This helped me sort that out
