So far has exceeded my expectations.
Have had this a little over a month and am very impressed. For my small office, I have had several disappointing multifunction machines by other manufacturers. A Xerox that I had didn't like sitting around on winter weekends with the heat lowered and wouldn't work for several hours on Monday mornings til its guts were perfect temperature. Gave up on Canons - two different Canons that we had were made with a little plastic trip switch that breaks if you don't breathe just so when you insert/remove toner cartridges - two different repairmen told me that for this reason alone, these Canons have built-in obsolesence and to toss them. One of those repairmen cursed the Canon and almost threw it out the window himself. A $1,000 Samsung made ridiculously gigantic 1MB pdfs out of low dpi scans of 1-2 pure text docs - Samsung's customer support said that's just how it is, and its software was so cranky and complicated that it deserved the name of Frankenstein. That Samsung dinosaur sits in the corner gathering dust. Numerous hp1536dfns worked great except the auto doc feeders would just quit - not mispick, but quit. Otherwise happy with the hp multifunctions, still, I was tired after buying at least 6 of those and experiencing dead automatic document feeders within 6 months of small office use. The Amazon reviews of this Brother were good, and reviewers assured me that the auto document feeder had withstood the test of time for them. I was hesitant to get a Brother, having had nothing but problems long ago with a Brother fax machine, and having judged Brother as "cheap." This Brother cost only about 29% more than the lowest price I had paid for any of the approx. six hp1536dfns that we had. This Brother is far faster, is much more versatile, offering features I'll probably never use but that don't get in my way - such as who needs fax any more anyway - and you can usb your smart phone into it to do everything you want without need of a PC. It's simple to use, has good instructions for set up and is easy and relatively fast to set up, although I took my time doing that so that I only had to do set-up once. She's quiet, is ready pretty quick after hitting the power switch, prints around 35 ppm which is plenty fast, does duplex copying, the command screen for scanning is simple and intuitive, her parts feel more substantial than those in the others we've had, the automatic document feeder works like a charm and reliably pulls paper through it straight (unlike the hp1536dfn), and the alternate document feeder on the front has not mishandled one single envelope or business check yet, whether the checks are set to print portrait or centered. So far, everything about this machine has exceeded my expectations. I've never had a multifunction printer before that would require replacement of a drum, but this one will, so that will be something new and an added expense down the line. But if this machine continues to be as reliable for us as everyone says it has been for them, I'm glad that aside from replacing toner as in all machines, my only hassle with it should be replacing a drum after 30K copies. I will update this review if anything changes. UPDATE: Jauary 22, 2016. Have had it 4 months with daily small office use. Am very happy still with it and all that I wrote before is still true.

Fast and flawless wireless setup for Macs/iPads
Flawless wireless set up. No error messages, no need for tech support. It took less than 10 min. to unpack, read the instructions, and set up wirelessly. The instructions are clear as long as you follow the table of contents and page numbers according to your computer network setup. Once the printer was connected, I intiated a print job from my Macbook Air and it automatically downloaded the software and drivers (no need to use the installation CD). I did have to search for "Brother" to locate where the program downloaded to so I could place a shortcut on the desktop. Scanning is quick and easy.AirPrint works quickly and easily with my iPad. You can also download the Brother app to scan to an iOS device. As for printing and scanning speed, to me it's really fast because I had been using a Canon multi function laser printer for the last seven years. I have not used the ADF much yet but it seems to work fine. The durability and frequency of paper jams is what needs to be evaluated after a long period of usage. I will update my review if there are any issues.Another plus for this printer is the printing cost in the long run. There is an available Brother high yield toner cartridge that costs about $90 which prints up to 8,000 pages. I had been paying $70 for my Canon which printed about 2,400 pages.Pros:-laser toner cartidge (cheap cost in the long run with the high yield cartidge)-wireless and USB connectivity (but you can't use both at the same time)-Mac friendly-AirPrint compatible for iOS devices-easy installation and user friendly printing, scanning, copying (can also fax but I don't plan on using it)-has a flatbed and ADF (holds 50 pages)-for me, monochrome is a pro because I don't need to print in color-good value (paid $299 on Amazon)-printed documents and clean and clearCons:-monochrome-can't use USB and wireless at the same timeAfter shopping online for 8-10 hours trying to figure what best fit my needs, I think this one is a winner for the error-free set up, ease of use, and low operating costs. And to think I almost went with an inkjet...

I really wanted to like this machine
I really wanted to like this machine. It was to replace a Cannon that was a bear to set up and to keep connected by WiFi.The Brother set up like a dream and was printing wirelessly in just a few minutes. Then I noticed that copies were of much lower quality than the same document printed with the Brother. A digital copy should be close to the same quality as the original. Copies on the Brother are worse than the 20 year-old copy machines that made every copy progressively worse. There are only three settings for adjusting copy quality on the machine (that I can find): graph, text and photo. I tried each setting and there is absolutely no difference -the copy looks like poop no matter what you do. Seriously, picture making a copy of a copy ten times on an old analog copier -that last copy is what the first copy from the Brother looks like .Then it started putting a gray stripe down the side of un-set toner. Nothing like smearing toner all over your page and your hands. Then the scanning, which worked the best (at first) started to put a light gray stripe down the center of every page. Scanning in color, the stripe comes out blue. It gets tiresome to have to put "Sorry about the quality of the scan" on the bottom of every email with an attached scan. I don't know why scans should be a problem since that has nothing to do with the toner and/or drum. I just have to guess that this machine has multiple and serious issues after two weeks of light use.I probably have put through about 400 at most pages, so it is still on the original toner/drum. I have thought about trying to replace them but that is probably a waste of money and I would still have scanning issues. Since I am within Amazon's 30 days for returning, that is what I will do.

Worked great for 3 yrs.
Purchased for my business and got a lot of use. Always used real Brother toner, and changed out the drum once. Lasted just over 3 yrs before an internal part died. I called Brother, and they shipped me a new, current model machine at no charge, even though this one was over it's warranty! Excellent customer service Brother!!!

Fast, reasonably quiet, work horse that doesn't reproduce certian complicated graphics
Pros: This machine is fast, relatively quiet, and dependable.Cons: Can not handle some graphic elements such as complicated transparencies with a multiple gradients. Also not great for scanning colour photos. They say not to expect great scanning of photos from these all in one machines, but I thought I might be pleasantly surprised, but I wasn't!Overall a solid workhorse for basic black and white printing.
