One New York Man's Journey to Off Grid Living in Montana Paperback – October 15, 2013

This book was so informative for us in so many categories. Rich is a natural instructor - detailed, simple to understand, step-by-step instructions, pitfalls. Glad we got this book/instruction manual!

The author makes a lot of good points about why he lives off grid and how to go about it. I didn't give him a higher star rating because it simply is not feasible for everyone to pick up and move to a rural area as he did. He also moved when he was younger and had more time to convert to off grid living. As to the how to's of converting, more detail would have been helpful, especially for the novices. It would have been nice to have more detail about how to go off grid or how to use less public utilities for more independent living. Here I think more research and detailed books about various aspects of it will be needed for those serious enough to attempt it.

I know the author; Rich and I have hunted, fished and shared many a wild game meal together with our better halves. My freezer still has a stack of steaks from Rich’s last Moose hunt. In Northwest Montana the barter system and neighbors sharing is alive and well. I have tasted the Muskox, the Arctic Char, the Elk, and some things I didn't ask :-).Rich has made the “art of off grid living” his passion, his purpose, and his mission. He has dedicated himself to educating and helping others appreciate and accomplish this amazing lifestyle goal, should they wish to do so.I find that reading his book is not different from sitting across the kitchen table from Rich and listening to him tell his story. The book is from the heart and Rich shares his life experiences in achieving self-sufficiency and independence from the concrete world.Rich walks us through many of the primary steps and challenges that need to be considered in living off-grid. The book covers many subjects such as acquiring the land, building the home, the water, the sun, the solar, the garden, the wild game/fish access, and much more.The book also offers insight and potential opportunities for people to learn to become more self-sufficient and live healthier lives. It is important to note that one does not need to make the complete wilderness off-grid transition in one swoop. If you listen to Rich’s weekly radio talk shows you will hear him explain that the path to self-sufficiency and a healthier life can be done in steps. You can do the garden, you can do the solar, the hobby farm, you can take up hunting and fishing… each step has its own rewards. The book explains this and much more.

Rich is the real deal. He speaks the truth in this book and his passion for the outdoors and the synergy in man has impressed me more than words I can write. I wrote an email to rich, I had to, I felt like I had to reach out one because I am a New Yorker and two I love to hunt and fish, I asked him a couple question that I have had for a couple years now and the next day I was driving home from work and the phone rings and to my complete surprise it was a number from Montana!! I remember I was in such awe that I almost didn't answer it. I did answer it and I'm glad I did. Rich took time out of his life to call and talk to me and help me on my path of self reliance and sustainability. I remember I called everyone I knew that day it seemed, and told them that this author just called me I was so taking back. Thank you Rich.This book embodies what it means to truly live a free life. I learned so much from this book and I am now planning my path to off grid living and my humble dream to raise my family free. Read this book I promise it will answer that question that is inside of all of us, "can I really do this", trust me with this book and Rich's help you can. This book changed my life and I am a better person and have a better understanding about the off grid life I hope to obtain in the near future. THANK YOU RICH

I could not have loved, resonated with, and appreciated this book more. Are you happy with what you see for a future in America? Rampant indebtedness alongside a failing currency. Millions who are looking to the government to support them? The erosion of personal freedoms. The shredding of our constitution. The ever shrinking middle class. A life of slavery to mortgages and utility companies, along with genetically modified food half the world has outlawed filling our grocery stores. How about an infusion of hope? How about exploring what you might do to change your living circumstances? Reading this book could be considered an investment in your own children's future. This is a book with a remedy which is not out of reach of people who are willing to take the initiative.When I read the author's take on political correctness and the damage it has inflicted upon the American people, I knew I had discovered a blood brother. I believe that the author's insights into this sickening and stifling happening called political correctness are dead on, and you will find yourself wanting to stand up and say YES at many junctures in this book.At the end of this book I found myself infused with a new hope. That there are some real ways that a person can claim back today what many of our forefathers and mothers lived, fought, and died for. I am inspired and encouraged by the words and themes of this great book! Do yourself a favor and order the book.

disappointing... should be more classified as a political pamphlet. I regret this purchase.

Unbelievable boring book from (so called) writer who dare to analyse American socio/political environment our immune system or vitamins, or .... pfff, instead to describe real challenge of Off Grid Living. Terrible terrible mistake to purchase this book. Disaster.
