Sound great. Fit in dash of JL/JT Jeeps, but not rollbar.
I put these in the dash of my Gladiator (with premium Alpine stereo). I'm usually pleased with the upgraded stereos that Chrysler uses (the Boston Acoustics in my other car remains my favorite car stereo, factory or aftermarket), but always found their Alpine systems very stale-sounding--and sure enough, the Alpine stereos are the only ones they offer that don't use real tweeters.Anyways, these Memphis speakers offer a dramatic improvement in the highs, and even helped spread out the soundstage a bit, which I wasn't expecting, but is a very welcome benefit. The treble these put out (on an otherwise factory system) are wonderfully balanced with a good amount of detail and plenty of dispersion. Compared to the factory 3.5 speakers, you do lose out on some of the lower midrange (think of the body of a male voice). Normally I like that (because this is the "muddy range"), but in a noisy environment like a Jeep with the top off, you lose a bit of the presence. I can't fault these speakers specifically, because I have little doubt that most comparable aftermarket speakers have the same effect; but I think it's something Jeep/convertible owners should consider. As an aside, if you're shopping for your Jeep, make certain that whatever you get is 4ohm (these are). Those popular Infinity and JBL speakers are 3ohm and will throw off the system's balance (front-rear, as well as tone balance) and likely distort far too easy (and could conceivably damage your factory amp). Infinity/JBL are proud of the fact that you can "get extra power out of your factory amp" by using a lower impedence, but if there were no tradeoffs, the manufacturer would likely be doing that to begin with. The system is designed for a 4ohm load in this location, so I implore you to stick with 4ohms. Dash/high frequency speakers don't usually need much power anyways. One more thing to note about these Memphis speakers: the size of the frame is slightly too large to fit in the rollbar spot on JLs and JTs. I imagine you can make it fit by grinding it down a bit, but I didn't look too hard because I'm not in a rush to take a rotary tool to my expensive new vehicle. As someone who is extremely picky about having matching tones front and back, I've pretty much decided that I'll instead go the other route I was initially considering: system completely factory, but wire in a pair of Dayton Audio air-motion pod tweeters in the front and rear. I've been waiting for a reason to try them, but was seduced by the more simple drop-in solution. All that said, I do still really like these Memphis speakers and recommend them. Instead of returning, I'm going to keep them and maybe use them in a project.. Maybe a portable bluetooth speaker or satellite.
