This is Where It's At!
The modern economy, the modern world for many of us has long since shown its true colors, its stripes are the stripes of servitude... the sentence: Life! That's how I felt doing my daily commute & grind. I Hated my life, back then. If you're reading this you are at a similar crossroads. I'd been reading about folks for some years now, who, to paraphrase Tim Leery: Dropped out, tuned in ... & left the 'Rat Race' behind. But how? I've perused much in this endeavor, but one of the key resources that saw me and my Fam along the way has been another Tim's book, Mr. Young's Homesteading, and how to actually make money doing it! This is the key departure from the radical 60's Gen I referenced above. Because, at some point in our society, you have to come to a realization that you have to pay for practically everything if you want to live, even, to say nothing of living your OWN Lifestyle. In here I found out how to do it, and how to do it in many different ways... Because there isn't just One type of homesteading for all homesteaders. This guide'll run you through how to start, itemizing your skills, what you can do with your land, local, herbing, farming, Arts & crafts, livestocking, seed farming, saving, housing, and so many other activities. You really just need to get a copy of this and go through it and there really does seem to be something for everyone.

A useful book
A "useful" book. Yes. As Mr. Young warns from the beginning, this book is not a guide, but is an intended as inspiration to seek out your own niche. About half-way I began to get disillusioned. It sends a lot of time on things of no interest to my lifestyle - I've lived "in the country" all my life and seek an even more self sufficient life there - I have no interest in making cheese, there's already someone here doing that. Likewise, many of the other suggested ventures are covered locally and I'm not starting from an urban perspective.I skipped to the profile on Herrick Kimball, whom I already follow at his Deliberate Agrarian blog. That kept me reading and re-opened my mind to what was being offered by the book. Tim Young's book is one of those things he tells us repeatedly to do, produce something other's want. His homestead income was enriched by my purchase but, I got something from the deal as well. The source references alone are worth the price of the book for me. Most of the rest I already knew, but I still got what he promised - inspiration.

Not only is it possible to live a more traditional lifestyle - to many, it's preferable. This tells you how.
My brother lives on a small acreage in some of the more remote landscape outside of Dallas, Texas. He and his wife have dreams of self-sufficiency and home steading, even earning money while doing it. My mind immediately goes to the quaint, checkered picture of a farmers market and homemade jams. Lovely, but how can you really make money doing it? Well, this Los Angeles transplant received quite an education with “Make Money Homesteading, so You Can Enjoy a Secure, Self-Sufficient Life: With 18 Inspirational Real-Life Profiles” by Tim Young. After reading this comforting and informative book, I fully expect my brother to be one of those inspirational stories. Not only is it possible to make a true living Homesteading, it is fairly common – and becoming more popular. Modern Homesteading blends the conveniences of contemporary life with the independence of traditional life. The stories featured here are perfect examples of that principle.Inspiring to those seeking a different way, this may give you the courage to take that step and break away from the daily grind.

Provocative book to get you thinking before fleeing the city
A great way to get your wheels spinning if you're thinking of jumping into the life of farming or homesteading.Tim made the leap himself and established a highly successful cheese business, in addition to many other farm enterprises. The interviews give a good overview of various approaches to life outside the city and how to earn an income. In addition, Tim provides a great list of questions and other tips throughout the book to consider before you take the plunge.Reading books such as this go along way in making sure you think through all the various facets that you don't want to overlook in making your decision to leave the grips of city life. I'd have loved to read something like this before we left the city!(full disclosure that we were one of the featured stories)

Making Money Homesteading... or Not.
This was an interesting book. I bought it expecting it to help me make a plan on how to quit my day job and make money homesteading. It did not accomplish that. In fact, most of the examples of homesteaders given in the book are actually people who have at least one family member who is actively engaged in full time employment away from the Homestead [to pay the bills]. What this book really taught me is that making enough money to survive with your homestead is almost impossible. On the other hand, the book was really well written and very interesting. I did learn from the people featured in the book, and I learned from what the author had to share. He does have a lot of good ideas in this book.I just feel a bit dejected after reading it though; it seems that my dream may not be something that is realistic.

Read it in two days!!!!!!!!
This is honestly the most helpful book I have read in regards to homesteading. I was looking for some ideas on how to make money while being more self sufficient. This book not only gave me some great ideas, but is also full of links to other websites to learn even more from others that have been successful. I do not read very often because I have trouble staying interested in a book, but this one I read in just two days because I couldn't put it down. I am so inspired now and this book made me feel like part of a homesteading family. I am looking forward to reading it again with my husband!

Having previously enjoyed Tim's book The Accidental Farmers
Having previously enjoyed Tim's book The Accidental Farmers, I had high expectations for this book, and it did not disappoint. There are many great ideas for making money, some of which I had never considered. He has also included case studies of homesteaders who have successfully implemented these ideas and made them work. It is a very positive and inspiring book that helps you envision what your farm can be. I found it very empowering, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to take their farm to a new level.
