Six strand embroidery floss (Article 117) & Pear cotton (Articles 115 - 116; Sizes 3, 5, 8, & 12) in a sample book with hundreds of colors. W100C Color Card Review: I am SO glad that I spent the extra money to get this ... - I am SO glad that I spent the extra money to get this instead of the paper chart. From the reviews I've read, the charts colors are way off, but this one is absolutely PERFECT. My only complaint is that the order of the threads isn't numerical, but organized by color family, which actually works better for people looking for certain colors. If you are thinking about getting a chart, do yourself a favor and get this one! Review: DMC Floss Color Card - I was really lucky to find this, as newer ones do not contain actual thread samples. I compared the thread ! ! samples to the color sample in the printed card I own and there certainly is a difference! Hopefully, some day DMC will start producing the thread sample cards again.

10 stars! There is NO substitute for this swatch card ... buy one quick!
10 stars! There is NO substitute for this swatch card. The colors are displayed as REAL lengths of floss wrapped around cardboard (and then glued to the folder). This is not a printed-on version. (Those are ok if this one is not available, but we all know that photos do not accurately reflect the real colors.) Picture 2 shows the card completely unfolded. When a group of new colors was released, I purchased those on individual cardboard cards (again, with real samples). DMC did not issue a new swatch card like this. Picture 3. The variegated colors on the swatch card are out of date. Don't use those. Go to your local shop. Picture 4. The card also gives examples (in Ecru) of floss and pearl cottons in #3, #5, #8, and #12 so you can compare thickness. Picture 1. For example, the chart calls for French knots in #3 pearl cotton. How many strands of floss are going to give you about the same thickness if you don't have any #3? Start with 12 and do some doodles. Depending on your tension, you may need more strands. Also note that if you have never worked with any more than 6 strands of floss, you need to do about 20 knots on a doodle cloth so you can learn how to control all those strands. Remember that you will have 12 (or whatever) strands going on, and they're going to try to move individually, not as a cohesive group. I am sure you've stitched with 2 strands and find them pulling thru differentially. Times 12 here! Note: A bigger French knot is made by using thicker thread, however you choose to do that: more strands, switch to pearl cotton, substitute a specialty thread, etc. A bigger French knot is NOT made by more wraps around the needle. More wraps around the needle will give you a TALLER knot. A taller knot is going to flop over; this means the knot will not stay where you placed it and it will be misshapen into the bargain! The colors are arranged by family. This is essential since colors in the same family are not numbered sequentially (probably they once were!). Having the colors arranged by color family is wonderfully helpful if you want to change colors in a design. Suppose you want to substitute one green family for another? Look through a piece of red translucent plastic (like a report cover) at the colors the designer suggests. Now look at the color family you are considering. You want to choose colors that are the same "darkness" (value) as the ones the designer chose. Each color (the ones specified and ones you are considering) will have a certainly "level of grayness." How does the grayness of your substitute colors compare with that of the designer's colors? Let value guide you in your substitutions in order to get the best possible result when changing colors. If this swatch card is still available, don't hesitate to snap it up!!!! These have not been made in at least 10 years (too expensive) & probably never will be made again. This is awesome!!!
I had a color card many years ago but it got left behind at the hospital when my husband died. I have started stitching again after 20+ years. I like to design my own patters. The card with the real floss is very helpful to decide which colors I want to use. I would never choose less than the card with the floss on it. I understand that prints of colors don't show true color. So, if you want to see the true colors get a color card with the floss on it.
