I have used it with 7 and 8 year old children and they are able to use it independently.

How long would you say it takes to follow the instructions and assemble one of the machines? Our science classes are 30 min long. Thanks.

Because different people complete things at different speeds, there isn't one definitive answer. But, depending on the difficulty level of the model (they get more challenging as you progress through the manual), they can take anywhere from 15 minutes about 30 minutes, on average.
