The Aftermath is set in postwar Germany in 1946. Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.

Good Sunday afternoon watch
Great cast and film, the correct ending too!I’m never quite sure if I’m a Keira fan or not , she seems to play herself but it’s an enjoyable watch.

Beautiful film
I agree with some other reviews that more historical detail should have been added. Ironically the 3 deleted scenes in the film which I watched at the end, would have done this admirably. Mystified at the rationale behind the deletion of 3 very key scenes. Loved the film and learnt so much about the bombing of Hamburg, the devastation it caused, the hunger and poverty that ensued for the people and the courageous Trummerfrauen who built up the city brick by brick. The film was a eye opener.

Enjoyable but facile
I think this film missed a trick. With a reasonable plot and cast, well delivered performances, it failed to explore some of the more important underlying issues.British memory and education for some 70years is full of the horrors of the Blitz, particularly in London. We were to,d little of the effects of British and Allied bombing if German cities, particularly Hamburg where there were more casualties in one night (some 40 to 50 thousand Germans, mainly civilians, killed in one night. More than the total killed throughout the whole of the Blitz). This film centres on the occupation of Hamburg in the early months following the war where British forces are deployed to help restore services, repatriate, document events etc. The locals are sleeping rough in the streets amongst the ruins of a devastated city, whilst British officers commandeer select residences for their own occupation during their tour of duty. The film explores the relationships between the German architect who owns the house and the British officer and wife for whom it’s been requisitioned. Both sides have suffered personal loss as a result of earlier enemy action during the war. The repercussions continue. So it’s an interesting plot, but it fails to fully develop the real tensions and resentments and better expose the reality of war. There are hints of the arrogance of the Allied occupiers and the ongoing civil unrest directed at the unwelcome Brits. There are stark and troubling contrasts; people scrabbling for food and heat amongst the ruins whilst the Brits wine and dine at the best hotel. Enjoyed it, but it could have been a blockbuster.

Impeccable acting this is a classy and classic film.
This is rather good. A well thought out love triangle set in the aftermath of WWII British occupied Germany.Really well and sensitively played by Knightly and Clarke. Skarsgard is coming up in the world with his underplayed style along with a secondary love mismatch between two young ideologists still grappling with the destruction of their city, now under British control. The criticism afforded this film are unwarranted. This is a love story with the destroyed Hamburg and WWII aftermath as a backdrop. Not a war story with a romantic undertone. The insensitive and impossibly difficult cicumstance Knightly's character was imposed with is brilliantly handled. The yawning gap in her relationship with her Colonel husband and her displacement from England to Germany brings about all the high tensions of post war distrust with the host German family under the same roof; leading to resentment, double dealings of betrayal, loss and grief. This is, all-in-all and very well told story.Fabulous editing, costume and sets are 1st class, photography portrayed the story well, production value was high. The only reason critics were uneasy, I think, was the misleading title of the film. It wasn't about the aftermath, even though it was dealt with as an additional cause for tension that finally provided the catalyst for the love triangle to close ranks. With impeccable acting this is a classy and classic film.
