Goldmine of Info for Aspiring Gold & Silver Dealers
This book is loaded with useful business information on how to buy and sell scrap gold & silver and make a profit. The author's experience in the pawn shop business shines through as he writes in great detail the ins and outs of cashing in on the current precious metals craze. Knowing how to tell fakes from real gold & silver items can make or break your business quickly. The author includes weight breakdowns, how to test for the karat content of gold (using stones, acid, gold testers, etc), markings to look for, and how & where to sell precious metal scrap. Some of the information is from the author's precious book on pawnbroking, so if you are contemplating buying both and you are only interested in gold & silver as a business, only buy Gold and Silver Scrap Dealers Handbook: How to Cash In on the Precious Metals Bonanza. .An easy afternoon read, prepare to take notes- you will be glad you did.

Book within a book with no real value
This book is of very little value. I was extremely disappointed. Most of this book includes direct copies of the author's previous book. The examples include prices that are out of date which made me think that the other information could also be dated. I would have posted a chart or set up examples of the math and suggested %'s (how much to pay, etc.) showing several different scrap metal prices scenarios (e.g. with a troy ounce of gold = $400, $650, $800, $1000, $1200, $1600, $2000, etc.)The information provided is pretty much common sense that almost anyone could figure out on their own.Spoiler alert! Here's what's in the book (yes, the common sense stuff):* Follow spot prices* Know what the Refiners and Scrap Buyers will pay you based upon the volume you send them.* Know the math or set up cheat sheets to translate troy ounces into what you may use to weigh the metal* Own a good scale* Check into the Laws of your state about buying and selling* Determine your buying price point, e.g. at what % of how much you could sell it for ... would be what you would pay* Keep in mind market fluctuation in regards to what the price may be when you get around to selling* Own and know how to use test kits* Determine how you'll deal with gems and stones, e.g. discount their weight, pay 0 for them, consider paying something for diamonds, etc.* Consider selling jewelry to an end user instead of scraping the metal* Be prepared to make a mistake now and then* Be creative, and possibly aggressive, about ways to buy or find the gold or other metals and/or about getting sellers to come to you* Don't forget silver, coins, flatware, tableware and other sources of metals to buy and sell* Know the way the different metals may be marked including the markings from anywhere in the world* Research what others are doing in you area, e.g. other buyers, jewelry stores, pawn shops, etc.Oops! Now you don't have to buy the book. Sorry.

Disappointed - A Quick Basic Read
After recently purchasing this book I was disappointed because so much of the book is outdated and devoted to pawnbrokers. While the general information is adequate, I was able to read all 140 pages in less than 2 hours, due to the large print. What's lacking is any good information on where to get sellers, such as yard sales, estate sales and gold parties. The best part of this book was the sections on buying and testing gold and silver. The chapter devoted to diamonds was very basic and not very valuable, since you need to be a certified gemologist to be able to tell real diamonds from the fakes. Then there was the 1.5 pages detailing his religious beliefs. While I respect his beliefs, I was looking for information about scraping gold and silver, not expecting to be preached to.In summary, I found this book to be overpriced for the information provided.

Super info for beginning precious metals scrappers
A couple months ago I came across a beat up copy of "Gold and Silver Scrap Dealers Handbook" and I'm so happy to find it here brand new! I just purchased the book as a gift for my brother who I often refer to as a "precious metals junkman", as he has been collecting silver, gold, platinum, copper and (his favorite) titanium since high school. We're in our 50's now and he has jars and buckets of the stuff. (Not of copper, obviously--that's what barns are for!) Collecting has never been the problem, selling it at a profit and in a professional manner was the info needed, hence this book as a birthday gift. The book is clear and contains good common sense and a few things I never thought of doing, like grading the gold with a test kit, (10K, 14K, etc.).I couldn't care less if the author used parts of his other book(s) because gold and silver scrapping is the only part I'm interested in learning about. I never would have picked up a book about pawn broking, so I'm glad the author broke out the gold and silver scrapping into a separate book.I am sure the book will pay for itself many times over by preventing us making beginner's mistakes when "cashing in."

An hour of my life I won't get back.
If you are the type of person who tollorates listening to a self appointed expert redundantly repeate himself for approxemently an hour this book may be for you. If you enjoy obsecure Bibilical refrances that add nothing to information content, this book has what you are looking for. Though if you are the type of person who looks forward to reading a book that has been professionally ededited this is not for you. If you would like to increase your knowlage of gold on any level, this book is defentantly not for you. Properly suited for a person who has an additional hour of there life in which they can find nothing other to do than read this book.
