Happy with Purchase
Was looking for a stainless steel mess kit. This fit the bill. I like the british/dutch design over the "oval" US mess kit. It fit's into a SAW pouch with room to spare for folk's, etc... This mess tins came in A1 condition and didn't require “harsh” scrubbing to clean it.If your mess kit come's in black and chard, simply put the mess kit pan inside of a heavy freezer bag, spray the mess kit with "Oven-Spray Cleaner" and leave to outside over night to work on your mess kit to remove the burnt marks. Clean thoroughly in soapy water the next day. It will look brand new!I won't eat out of aluminum for health reason's. If you frequently cook acidic food in aluminum pots, you may be exposed to higher levels of aluminum which will lead to Alzheimer's disease. This has been known since WWII. Infact, aluminum cookware is banned in 6 european countries.

Heavy duty
These are built very heavy duty. Mine were in new condition. They will fit perfectly in a USGI molle canteen cover.

Excellent for camping but the handle design leaves much to be desired.
I like the rectangular design of this kit. For years I used a British set identical to this except that it was made of tin plated steel. The tin melted in the heat of a fire and ran down the sides leaving the steel exposed and rusting. I refuse for health reasons to use aluminum which the Brits use to make theirs now for issue to their field troops. When I discovered that the Dutch make theirs out of stainless steel, I searched Amazon until I found an unissued set for sale. After several uses over a wood fire, this set developed a beautiful black patina which absorbs heat much more evenly than aluminum. No tin to melt either. The larger pot is just the right size to heat an MRE retort pouch in boiling water and either size will heat food in cans which I sometimes prefer due to its lower cost and wider variety despite its additional weight. It works as a skillet to fry eggs and bacon or spam, fish, etc. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is the folding handles. They work great except when pouring hot liquid. You have to be very careful not to burn yourself when the handle unexpectedly folds and the hot liquid spills. I have seen folding handles on commercial backpacking pots and cups that lock into place so the technology exists and there is no reason for this unsafe feature. I get around this by using a peeled forked stick to prevent the pot from folding, but it's a two handed operation. Beats being scalded, however. Other than that, it's a perfect pot system for me.

Maybe the best mess kit?
Great piece of gear. I think they only show the wear and tear of long term storage. It is stainless steel, has MdD markings. No rivets! Big tin is 18 x 13 x 5.5 cm (7 1/16 x 5 1/16 x 2 1/8 in), small tin 16 x 12 x 5.5 cm (6 5/16 x 4 3/4 x 2 1/8 in). Total weight 478 g ( 1.05 lb).

Aluminum, not stainless steel
I looked around and there are aluminum mess kits everywhere. This was the only stainless steel mess kit I could find. I specifically wanted stainless steel not aluminum. When I opened it, literally 5 minutes before writing this review, it felt a little light and didn’t look like stainless steel. So, I took one of my magnetic chip clips off the fridge…it didn’t stick; not even to the handles. Okay, maybe that magnet is weak even though it holds a death grip on my stainless steel Henckels knives. I got a more powerful magnet…same result. I wanted and was prepared to pay more for a stainless kit over an aluminum one. Well, I definitely paid more but didn’t get what I was paying the premium for. It’s going back.

Great Surplus Kit
My kit was received quickly and in great shape. Very solid build and tough spot welds. Both pans have a ‘96 date code and we’re not dented or abused. Plenty of internal room to sore a Trangia or solid fuel stove. Great for stacking on top of each other to boil water or keep things warm. Love the stainless has cleaned up easily during the 6 times I used it. Not ultralight but perfect for an afternoon in the woods. Nice fit in a US IFAK pouch or Canadian mess kit pouch.

Rectangular design is extremly practical of cooking, storage, stowage
I picked this up to use for hiking/backpacking. It fits perfectly in the side pocket my of my ULA Circuit backpack, takes up less space in my day pack. Very practical design, two rectangular pots for cooking or a single pot and a lid. Also, more internal storage for carrying stove, stand, food/spices, etc. Give this Mess Tin a hard look. Note - This stainless steel mess tin is the Dutch version of the British Pattern 1937 Web Infantry Equipment (Patt. '37 W.E.), stored in the Haversack. Tough as the soldiers that carried them!
