They enjoyed the book and I did too
When my teenage grandkids were small I bought the original Topsys & Turvys for them. They enjoyed the book and I did too. When I wanted to find it for my little grandkids I was happy to find this on Amazon.

Clever and silly but of a different time
I got this for a little kid for Christmas, thinking it'd be a fun and entertaining read for them. But looking through it, I'm not sure how comfortable I am actually giving it to them. There are a few pages that play on some nasty, dated stereotypes and language, like "Japs", "Sambo", a black kid eating watermelon, and a very Jim Crow-esque character whose speech is written with a very stereotypical faux-accent. The way some other "ethnic" characters are drawn are similarly stereotypical, but not as egregious as the aforementioned examples.I definitely wouldn't want the kid picking up the language used or the stereotypes shown, and I doubt many others would either. I'm really surprised they included these when compiling this book... like, the illustrations are from the 1890s. Whatever. But you know better in 2017 than to include this crap in a KID'S BOOK.If you feel like taking the time to make clear to your kids that the stereotypes found in the book are harmful, then feel free - the drawings and rhymes are well-done, clever, and fun to read - but if you don't want to have to do that, or would rather avoid these stereotypes altogether, look elsewhere.
