Me and Mr. Darcy: A Novel

Cute story, but somewhat disappointing
This book was recommended to me because of my love for P&P and though I thought the basic premise of the story was interesting there were a few things that left me a bit disappointed. First and most importantly was the author's portrayal of Mr. Darcy. I have wondered if the author and I had read the same P&P novel. I just couldn't wrap my head around Mr. Darcy being so pursuant of Emily, throwing rocks at her bedroom window, the picnic, and just his manor of speaking. I was quite disappointed in that because these were not my perception of actions and mannerism that I found to be in the character of the Mr. Darcy that I perceived as created by Jane Austen. And though I rather liked Emily, she offered little personality or feistiness that I felt would catch the affections of Mr. Darcy in the same way he was captivated by Lizzy; she just does not compare. Which brings me to my second gripe, the character Emily. I did like Emily, she was a likable personality and did show a little wit and sense of humor, but to be in her late 20's she was completely naive, a little bit immature, and oblivious to the parallel of what is going on during her trip in England and storyline of P&P until the end of the story. Third, the character Spike. I really liked Spike's personally; he was a bit of an ass, but actually had a kind heart. What I hated was that his name was Spike, I thought it was completely ridiculous and the fact he was so described as being so sloppy, it wasn't endearing sloppy, it was disgusting sloppy. I did, however, like old ladies that were on the tour, I found them be lovable characters.I liked the book overall, it was cute and an easy read, but it fell short; it could have been something fairly great

Irritating typos
This is a first for me. Normally don't review orders altho I do make it a habit to read reviews prior to buying. So, to be helpful to someone else, thought I write this. There is nothing wrong with the book or the story. I purchased the kindle edition and was very irritated with multiple typographical errors! I doubt this was an original book error, so I must believe the errors occurred during 'translation' to kindle. Errors like pifia colada for pina coloda, all "um" quotes are "urn" who says "Urn...?, everytime there is something italized it has a V stuck to it-- whatV. One or two is OK, but it is all over this book or rather this edition. This was not my first kindle book, so I know that it is not usual to see typos in the ebook. Anyway, if I knew there were multiple typos prior to buying I would have passed. Hope this helps you decide one way or the other.

Fun little romp through England
I bought this on a whim while skimming through ebook offerings at my public library site. Came here and got the sample and enjoyed it, so I downloaded the whole novel. I enjoyed it. It was great fun. There is just enough of a journey of self-discovery to make it "worthwhile". Her interactions with the senior citizens on her tour are fun and heartwarming. Older people are still people and shouldn't be underestimated....good for her for realizing it and embracing it. I like that she learned the lesson that Pride & Prejudice is supposed to teach...and in a different time and place. I read it for an escape and I received that escape. I thought it was fun!

Comical - but missing something,,,,,,
I thought this was a very funny book. I read it over 4 nights and found myself snickering about scenes from the book the next day. While it was an enjoyable read, and the main character was very relatable - there was something that was just slightly amiss. The Darcy character was off somehow. Having said that, I can appreicate that every reader has their own Mr. Darcy and we do not all see him exactly the same way.Overall, it was certainly an enjoyable read and well worth the time and money!

Not Shakespeare but a fun and quick read
This book is mostly fluff, but it's a fun and a quick read. It does deal with at least one major issue: women in relationships and why they choose who they do. I haven't decided yet if the book ends in a copout. Suffice it to say, the book takes what could be construed as an anti-feminist take on relationships. Think My Fair Lady or (obviously) Pride and Prejudice. However, it's a love story and as we all know, life and love rarely turn out like a treatise on the perfection of the female psyche. Take it for what it is and you won't be disappointed.

FUN to read
I enjoyed this book so much I could hardly put it down until I was finished. I will admit that it was somewhat predictable and the parallels were very obvious between the present day characters and the Pride and Prejudice characters. Overall, I thought it was a fun, light-hearted read. I especially enjoyed the relaxed voice the author used - I could almost hear the characters speaking the words on the page.

I enjoyed this book!
I was not sure that I was going to like this book when I first started reading it, but then I couldn't put the book down and by the time I read the ending, I loved it! I thought the story flowed nicely and was well written. There was a lot of humor in the story, yet some very poignant moments too. I also felt that I really got to know the characters.

Review of E-Book Quality - Not Book Itself
I'm not sure if it's just this book, or if it's just my Kindle, but this is the first e-book I've purchased where there have been several mistakes in the text. I haven't read much of the book yet (maybe 5%), but I've already run across several mistakes, such as Cancun being spelled Canciin, missing apostrophes, missing quotation marks, missing spaces, and many other things of that nature. Thus far, a little disappointed in the e-book quality.

Alright, but main characters not particularly likeable. Better modern Austen-inspired books out there
New Yorker Emily is sick of dating unsatisfactory men and yearns romantically for a man like Mr Darcy. To avoid accompanying her friend on an 18-30 holiday to Mexico Emily impulsively books a Jane Austen tour to the UK. Most of the other people on the tour are quite a bit older than Emily aside from Spike, who is a journalist writing a piece on why women love Mr Darcy so much,Emily and Spike get off on the wrong foot and she also misjudges a lot of the other people on the tour. She also has some rather bizarre run-ins with Mr Darcy which may or may not be real.I found the author's style to be really readable and the book to be easy reading, but I struggled to keep the momentum going because the main characters are not really all that likeable, and I felt that most of the characters, Spike particularly, could have done with a bit more fleshing out. Relationships/friendships seemed to be formed almost instantaneously. The Mr Darcy sections were odd, Emily doesn't seem to question the reality of meeting a fictional character very much at all, or worry in any way that the pages of her Pride and Prejudice appear to have gone blank. There are a number of parallels made with Pride and Prejudice, but I think the dialogue had too many similarities to the original to sound realistic as modern speech and for somebody who is a Jane Austen fan on a Jane Austen tour Emily seems slow to recognise any similarities between her situation and Pride and Prejudice. Also Emily judges Mr Darcy harshly, blaming him for not having modern standards and making no allowances for the fact that if he's really there he's 200 years out of his era and society is very different. The moral of this is what most people already know, that Mr Darcy is a book boyfriend who is better off left in his book.

Amateurish at best avoid
I hate being negative about books as a lot of love goes into them but this one was horrendous. If you're an austen fan do not go near this, it's lazy and pedestrian. Chock full of really unlikeable poorly written characters. It feels desperately amateur, even down to grammar issues and eye-rollingly bad characterisation. Even in places a little racism, and I couldn't work out if the writer was English pretending to view British quirks through an American perspective that was how it came across, just very unconvincing.I wish I liked it but its just not good.

Romantic title great book
"Me and Mr Darcy" the title shows to any great reader of Pride and Prejudice that there could be hope for everyone who has a romantic notion in their bones. This is my second Alexandra Potter book and they both have been well worth the read. Great holiday book too but found it hard to put down. The story takes place just after Christmas in snowy England on a Jane Austin tour. You meet all the characters in detail. But mainly focuses on Emily an American who loves the story and mysteriously finds the invite to the tour in the bookshop where she works. The last thing Emily expects to find on her excursion is a broodingly handsome man striding across a field, his damp shirt clinging to his chest. But that’s exactly what happens when she comes face-to-face with none other than Mr. Darcy himself.

Dissapointed
When I wrote story's as a child and I didn't know how to finish them I would write and them they woke up and everything was back to normal. This was like that. I read it all the way through although I'm not sure why when I knew it was all a fantasy. So many better books about.

I enjoyed reading it despite the fact the story was a bit silly, the author's style annoying at times (and full of stereotypes on Europeans) and the story very predictable. But it was a nice easy read. And it made me want to read the original again. Overall it was quite a nice book and I would recommend it.
