2011 reprint of the 1962 edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "Considered the bible of scouting techniques" according to the Los Angeles Times, Football Scouting Methods explains the basic scouting strategies and insights of author Steve Belichick. He was widely viewed as the ablest football scout of his time and coached at the U.S. Naval Academy for 33 years; his son is New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, a three-time Super Bowl winner. When Steve Belichick died in November 2005, the New York Times headline cited him as "Coach Who Wrote the Book on Scouting," and quoted Houston Texans General Manager Charley Casserly calling Football Scouting Methods "the best book on scouting he had ever read." Joe Bellino, Navy's Heisman Trophy winner in 1960, told the Times that Steve Belichick "was a genius. On Monday nights, he would give us his scouting reports, and even though we were playing powerhouses, I always felt we were prepared because he found a way for us to win." In recent years Football Scouting Methods has been one of the top ten most sought out-of-print books; used copies have been quite scarce. This reissue edition makes the original 1962 text available once again in exact facsimile. The book covers how to scout opponents, recognize defenses, analyze offenses, discover "tip-offs" that reveal the opponent's plays, compose a useful report, self-scout, and conduct postgame analysis. "Steve Belichick taught many younger men how to scout and how to watch film and how to prepare their teams for the next week's game," David Halberstam noted in the Washington Post, and his best student was his own son Bill Belichick, "one of whose greatest skills as a coach to this day remains his ability to analyze other teams, figuring out both their strengths and their vulnerabilities, and shrewdly deciding how to take away from them that which they most want to do." When CBS asked Bill Belichick to name his favorite book, he replied "Well, I've got to go with my dad's. Football Scouting Methods. I'd have to go with that." Review: Definitely The Bible Of Scouting Technique - Steve Belichick's "Football Scouting Methods" is an indispensable resource for football coaches and enthusiasts aiming to deepen their understanding of the game's strategic intricacies. Often hailed as the "bible of scouting techniques," this manual offers a comprehensive exploration of scouting fundamentals, including opponent analysis, defense recognition, offense evaluation, and the identification of critical "tip-offs." Despite being published in 1962, the principles and methodologies Belichick presents remain relevant, providing timeless insights into effective scouting practices. Readers have praised the book for its engaging and well-structured content, noting its value to both novice and seasoned coaches. While some of the formations and terminologies discussed may be dated, the core concepts are adaptable to modern football analysis. This book is a must-read for those committed to mastering the art of football scouting. Review: Lots of knowledge - I could have went for larger print with more pages, however for what I got and what it is, it’s an amazing tool for anyone who inspires to learn more about being part of the football industry. It covers all the small things in large details and the large things in brighter details. I’m glad I got the book, the forward alone will have you hooked. First page in I went into a new land and wound up on page 20 before I even realized. I recommend the hardcover version because this is one you want in your library to come back to. Don’t read without your highlighter ready.

A little dated, but a still somewhat relevant work
Written for the era when teams ran the Wing-T against the Wide Tackle 6 and exchanging game films on 8mm film was a new idea, this book is now a bit dated. And to understand it you have to have enough grasp of the game that much of it will seem obvious. But nevertheless it is useful in that it puts into words and creates a framework on which to hang the observations of tendencies and form a big picture. As such, it is still probably a must read for a student of the game, or especially a beginning scout.

Great football book
This book is great for anyone trying to learn how to scout a team. Obviously this book was written a long time ago and the game has changed very much since then. However the information on how to scout a team is still highly relevant. The formations shown in diagrams will not be seen in today's game, but that doesn't matter since the diagrams were not meant to show the formations that you will see but how to sketch the formations that you do see. The names of some position have also been changed, but it is quite easy to realize who he is talking about in the terms we use today. Steve Belichick is a great football mind and this is a great football book.

Good but not Great
I was extremely excited to jump into this book being this was the man who taught Bill Belichick about football. However, as you read the book you realize that a lot of the information is outdated and not applicable to today's game. He mentioned that few teams pass more than they run, and makes numerous reverences to games that took place in the 50's and 60's. Also, the terminology used has its differences as he will reference a nose as a defensive guard among others. Don't get me wrong there are still many valuable tips and important things to learn from this book; just know that there are quite a few pages that won't be useful in today's spread it out, high flying, pass first offenses.

Taking Scouting to the Next Level
Great for any coach who wants to learn the more technical side of scouting football teams. It is not hard to read, but you need to spend the time to study this book. If you really want to take away information and become a better scout, this is the book for you. But as I said you need to study it. Take notes, underline, and reread passages as you need to.

THE quintessential book on football scouting
If you are, hope to be, or want to learn about football scouting, you are doing yourself & the job itself a complete disservice if you do not own a copy & have read (multiple times) this quintessential book on the subject of football scouting. I am straight up not overselling this book AT ALL & any scout that has read this book will almost surely tell you the same thing. Written decades before anyone (outside of maybe college football coaches/scouts) ever knew of or cared about anyone named Belichick, this book was known in scouting circles as THE book on the topic. Well written, concise, easy to follow & incredibly pragmatic in it's methods. Just like the Belichick men themselves.

An excellent addition to any coaches library.
This was a great book for both new coaches, or seasoned coaches looking to improve their scouting. Belichek does a great job of analysing how to effectively scout all phases of the game, without dictating policy. While the anecdotes, stories, terminology (defensive quarterback?) and proposed equipment (mimeograph?) to use are quite dated, the game is not much different than it was back then. Players still give the same tip-offs, coaches still develop tendencies, and scouts still forget that they aren't there to "watch" a football game. Definitely a book to keep on the shelf.

Clássico
Simples e atual.
