GREAT BOOK!!!!!!
Great book to have in your library, if you're interested in learning about Black history in GENERAL (not just African American). It does a GREAT job of highlighting the wonderful achievements of Blacks, in the U.S., in Africa, and around the rest of the world. The narratives are mostly a page per person, and each page is illustrated! -- and so it makes it VERY EASY to follow, even for young people. It doesn't ramble on and get boring. I've learned SO MUCH from the book -- and I'm a University Professor! I found it in our university library, and I decided I HAD to get one for myself. I was not aware of quite a number of the great people listed, and it was quite an eye opener! As a matter of fact, I found out that some individuals that I had always thought of as white were actually BLACK! I didn't know that the author of the 3 Musketeers, and that of "The Count of Monte Cristo" was actually black! -- Alexandre Dumas. I've learned so much information that people tend to take for granted, or that the educational system has neglected for so long. Knowing this information makes me feel so proud to know, that I come from such a wonderful heritage.

Great basic literature on black history, but note that each biography is concise
I had this as a little girl (many years ago) and my book was damaged, so I found and bought this. Though I question the accuracy at times, it's an excellent basis for those who want to know condensed versions of black history. I think is should be a must-have in anyone's library who is interested in history period.

Every kid should read this from the 5th grade up
I loved it so much I bought it twice. I may buy it a third time to give to others. This is more present day individuals. This is an eye opening book showing how Blacks created and thrived in Medicine, Science, Technology, Education, and many more areas..... yet we are only taught about 4 people throughout our school year. Read this in conjunction with The Mis--Education of the Negro. We need true heroes also.

Content is fine, condition of book is not.
I was not at all happy with the condition of the book. I bought it as a gift and ended up keeping it. I would have returned it if I hadn't forgotten.
