Not what I expected
I enjoyed the book but I was looking for a standard alex cross murder mystery. This didn't cut those expectations.

Trial
Being from the South (but not Mississippi), I certainly know about the horrows this book spoke of. It was an absolute truth (but I do not feel that I am personally responsible for any of the terrible things that happened). Slavery was a part of the South that should not have happened but did. The one thing that is never talked about is that it happened in the North and Africa also. Maybe not exactly, but I saw some of the recent worse discrimination I know of in the Chicago area when I lived there. The lynching, killing and awful treatment of the Blacks was brought to light in this book to anyone in this day and age that had not been exposed to this part of the South. There again, I have heard of Blacks who went North only to come back to the South and wanted to stay as a "slave" of their master as they were treated better than they were in the North. The North was cold and it was hard to get work, find a place to live, and be treated like a "real person". There are many stories of the South that are proclaimed to be only a Southern occurance - like moonshine also - that were not just a Southern problem. The book was an excellent read but am sorry someone has not exposed the North and their problems just as vividly. The treatment of the immigrants (Irish, Jews, etc.) is just not as exploited.

Excellent!
This was a hard one to read. Whites vs Blacks. The anger, the hatred, the pain. I have to admit, I don't understand it and I pray we never get there again.

Chilling, but accurate, portrayal of life in the southern United States during the Jim Crow years.
This book took me back to a terrible time in the country's history that we are still feeling the repercussions of today. It helped me to feel the terror Black people felt due to the lynchings and other crimes inflicted on them by the KKK, mostly in the former slave holding states, The reason for the cruel treatment of Black people, and the terrorist night raids was actually shown to be the white population's fear of losing privileged status in society and their fear of not being able to compete fairly for jobs and resources against Black people who were used to working harder and longer hours for little or no pay. In fact, many Black citizens were still working and living under inhumane conditions on plantations that operated just as they had when slavery was legal. Unfortunately, the government at all levels was in cahoots with the racists, citizens in all walks of life were in the KKK, and thus, the Black population had little to no source of help during those decades of Jim Crow and racial terrorism.

Excellent Tale!
Another excellent book in Patterson’s Alex Cross series! I’ve read so many, I can no longer determine which I’ve read and which I have not. For certain, however, is the fact that this tale did not fail to captivate and intrigue. Having been born and raised on the coast of Mississippi, however, tales of the historic lynchings and hatred for black people continues to shock and sicken me.

Excellent story of the confrontations of black versus white people ...
Excellent story of the confrontations of black versus white people in the South after the Civil war. The extreme prejudice of the white people againstblack people is evident in lynchings and killings by the outlawed KKK reveals a historic time in America's history. When an attorney is sent by the President to investigate the reports of these actions, he ends up being hung by himself and manages to live.He finds friends that are sympathetic to end of the killings and manage to arrest and bring to trial three suspects knowing that they would be set free to continue their destructive ways.An epic battle between the blacks and the KKK results in a major change in the behaviors of all involved and leads to a change in the mental attitude of the times. An excellent writing by this author that is written fairly and accurately.

An interesting and gripping read
This book is fascinating as it's not about Alex Cross at all. Rather it is the story of his ancestor's and how they survived the KKK.I was mesmerized by this story as it is the beginning of the Cross family story starting not long after the freedom of slaves was brought about in America. I feel that there is a huge link to nanamama that will be brought up in another book and I look forward to discovering it in full!I definitely recommend this book to Alex Cross fans everywhere but discretion should be used in some circumstances as it is very graphically violent in places

Trial
Something completely different in the Alex Cross series, but a page turner none the less. This book had me gripped from start to finish. Alex Cross only appears at the beginning of the book, but that makes no difference to the story which unfolds. History, crime, politics, loyalty, friendship - how all thses things are inter-twined keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next.

Best Patterson yet
What an absolute corker of a tale. Definitely not what I was expecting when I started reading this book. 1st impressions weren't good as I read it wasn't a full on Detective Alex Cross story. But I stuck with it and boy was I in for a thrilling ride. Following a story of Alex's ancestry back in the early 1900's and how events unfold are truly fascinating

Shame on James Patterson
Unfortunatley, I hadnt read the current reviews on Amazon about the book before I bought it, so I didnt know its not actually a Alex Cross novel. Im an avid Alex Cross fan and settled down to read what I thought was the latest installment of the Alex Cross story only to feel very disappointed with and cheated by James Patterson and his publishers. This is definately false advertising! Even the 'praise' on the back cover is for another book, not this one! It seems James Patterson is now only out to make money and no longer a friend to his readers....
