This is a definitive 2-CD overview of Marty's 30-year recording career, from his early hits on Columbia all the way to his MCA hits and back again, a true monument to this musical giant.

C.D. is an ~ Over-view of Robbin's Career.
He was one of the true Country-Western singers ~ with the emphasis on Western.Born in Arizona in 1925 & surrounded by poverty his grandfather told him tales of the Old West.Robbin's worked odd jobs so he could see Gene Autry Westerns at the Saturday Matinee. Those South-westerner roots are reflected repeatedly through-out Robbin's extensive career. This collection starts with Robbin's first charted country single in 1952 ~ 'I'll go on alone'and contains 32 top ten hits ~ 3 top twenty's & 1 top forty ~(plus 4 others not on country chart ~ later explained). The last song of this C.D. ~ Honkytonk man ~ is Robbin's last top ten hit in 1982 ~he had 3 more song chart through 1983 ~ none made the top 40 & are not here.Of Robbin's 92 charted singles 81 made the country top 40 ~36 of those 81 are here ~ which is much of his best known. But for some who have followed his career you're likely to notice a few of your favorites missing.Personally I'd rather have had some more hits then these four tracks ~1. Mr. Teardrop ~ 1956 released for single but didn't chart.2. You gave me a mountain ~ 1969 album cut from L.P. 'It's a sin'.3. Ballad of the Alamo ~ 1960 top forty on the pop chart only.4. Faleena ~ 1966 from the movie El Paso.Even so ~ this is still one of the best pockets of Marty Robbin's hits available. All original recordings ~ re-mastered stereo and has excellent sound.Includes a ten page booklet detailing track information & Robbin's career.

VERY GOOD...BUT NOT PERFECT
This is a nice way to get most of Marty's highlights throughout his career at a relatively cheap price. The problem with this compilation & the others is that they leave off far too many Top 10 Country hits. For example, where's "It's Your World"? That single went to #3, and it even went to #51 on the Pop charts, yet it's curiously absent here. There are also several Top 100 Pop hits missing. Maybe the folks putting these collections together should look at Joel Whitburn's books now and again! My feeling is that if you're doing an "essential" collection by a country artist, you should include at least all of their Top 10 Country hits & Top 40 Pop hits. Is that too much to ask? I guess it is. Anyway...this is actually a pretty decent set if you enjoy Mr. Robbins' work but don't really care if it's missing some chart hits. But for a completist like me, it's somewhat frustrating. I just hope that some day Sony will get on the ball and do a 4-cd box set with all of his hits & some nice rarities.

You've gotta get this cd!!!
I"m an old Marty fan from way back--My mom played his lp's on our big cabinet floor stereo and I would sing along with her. This is a fabulous selection covering the highlights of his career. I liked that the songs were positioned in order of the month & year they were recorded, also said on the liner notes where each tune placed on the charts. From the first tune "I'll Go On Alone" recorded in 1952 to his farewell song "Honkeytonk Man" done in November 1982, you can hear his fantastic voice mature and mellow into the sensational artist that he was. You'll also be surprised when you read the accompanying booklet as to how many of these hits that he penned. If you like him or are just now discovering this superb true country-western artist, this 40 song cd is a MUST HAVE!!!

Great music from a master chameleon
Marty Robbins recorded many types of music in his long and varied country music career. His forays into pop led to Top 40 success. This two-disc collection tries to boil down his career to 40 songs. Of course, it can't be done, but this is a wonderful introduction to a man with a golden voice. You get his early cuts, such as "I Couldn't Keep From Crying," to his pop successes like "The Story of my Life," onto his wonderful gunfighter songs like the immortal "El Paso." You get the picture. These two discs draw a thumbnail sketch of Robbins' entire career, up to his final top ten "Honkytonk Man," which isn't a remake of the Johnny Horton song, but a song from the Clint Eastwood film of the same name. It's a wonderful way to round out the collection. Robbins was one of a kind, and this is a good way to discover his music.

Two editions of same title
I bought this a few years ago when it first came out and the tracks then were listed correctly but consisted of the following albums "The Song Of Robbins", "Rock 'n' Roll 'n' Robbins", "The Song Of The Islands" and the self-titled "Marty Robbins": I see that the current edition is totally different and so can understand people's frustrations. I notice also that the catalogue and bar code number are the same for both versions. Not Now Music should have allocated a new bar code number for the revised edition. I'm glad I've got the original "Hawaiian" version as I already have most of the "cowboy" tracks on other albums. Who knows, perhaps it may become a rarity and valuable..One hopes!!

MARTY ROBBINS...GOLDEN VOICE...FABULOUS ARTIST!
You will not believe how great this set sounds. The first few notes of "A White Sport Coat" and you'll be hooked. "Singing The Blues", "The Story Of my Life" (a personal favorite), and the hard to find and superb "Just Married" follow....really will wisk you away to the 50's when Marty sang rck 'n roll, rockabilly, pop, and the blues. He truly hits a brilliant combo of styles that made the 50's great. And nobody had a more versatile and smooth voice. He could do it all...and he does on this 2 CD set. Backed by the sensational production crew that propelled Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett back then...those background voices, that stunning group of writers and musicians...man, Columbia knew what sounded timeless and bright! This "Not Now Music" collection is awesome. These are original recordings, and the sound will knock your socks off. I have purchased and written a rave review for a "Not Now Music" Christmas collection as well. So far I am thrilled with their quality. Buy this collection and relive great music from the 50's and 60's! I have been a major fan of Marty for decades, and had the good fortune to see him live on stage. This is a major bargain and I only regret that I cannot award more than 5 stars. The first 5 songs alone are easily worth the purchase price. Thank you, Mr.Robbins....for this fantastic music.
