The Gospel of John (New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT))

Marvelous commentary
Several have mentioned disagreement with chapter three in the section on being born again, and I agree that the explanation goes awry there. However, please do not refrain from getting this commentary for that reason. I have been preaching through John and have used it almost through chapter 14. I have found no other commentary that has helped me meditate on the text of Scripture effectively like this commentary. It is truly a treasure. Buy it and be blessed.

Very Detailed
I am using this commentary, along with the previous NICNT commentary on John's Gospel by Leon Morris, for a Bible Study course on the "I AM" sayings of Jesus, and have been quite pleased with the valuable information contained in this commentary. I find this book very suitable for searching themes on topics within John, and will continue using it in the future.

An excellent commentary in an excellent series
An excellent commentary in an excellent series. Great analysis of the gospel from a historical, language, and theological point of view.

Don't waste your money
I purchased this book unfortunately. And Planeman nails it! This is a cumbersome addition to the NICNT that too often reiterates the surface reading of the text rather than delving more deeply into the text itself. I would say at least 80 per cent of this commentary is spent doing such. I could not find any significant contributions that Kostenberger, Carson or Keener had not brought up. If you want to get your hands on good commentaries on this important book go and grab Kostenberger, Ridderbos and Keener (I leave out Carson because Kostenberger is a student of Carson and his commentary covers most of his thoughts with a few interesting additions). I would have to say that this commentary is the worst I've come across in the NICNT series particularly when you look at the recent additions to the New International series! Tsumura's 1 Samuel is at the cutting edge and yet this is just dross! If you would like some material to put you to sleep then purchase this.

This is my favorite set of commentaries. The NICNT and the NICOT are great tools for exegetical teaching.

A poor successor to Leon Morris's commentary on John in the same series
I have Leon Morris's commentary on John in this series and thought I would Michael's book to supplement the former. I am sorry to say, I have found Michael's book a poor successor Morris. In my view, Michael's adds nothing new. In addition, I find where Morris is succinct and incisive, Michaels is wordy and at times aimless as he pads out his commentary with comments and questions that add nothing to the understanding of the text in question.I know reviews are subjective, know I might simply prefer Leon Morris's style, and some might think I have been harsh on Michaels, but I did expect more from a commentary written some time after Morris's work. I hope Morris's work remains in print for a long time to come in this series of commentaries. If given the choice between the two I suggest you might buy Morris's work as, in my opinion, Michaels commentary is not a patch on it.
