I highly recommend these books
As a special education teacher, reading specialist and private tutor, I consider these chapter books a valuable resource for students who are either struggling readers, or readers who need an opportunity to practice and generalize their phonics instruction within decodable text. The chapter book series are designed to support the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is an explicit, systematic, evidence based method for teaching reading. The short passages consist of decodable word patterns integrated with high frequency sight words that are engaging and humorous. The passages are also sprinkled with Tier 2 words, which provide the opportunity to expand a child's curiosity and vocabulary.I use some of the text to orally dictate sentences to my students for the purposes of writing instruction. This facilitates their practice of learned spelling patterns, vocabulary, writing mechanics, and an understanding that reading and writing are relational and integrated, not separate. I highly recommend these books.

Not for me
These are in fact readable books if you follow the Wilson reading program - the student will be able to read every word. The chapter book format is very appealing for struggling readers who want to read books like their peers are reading. However this makes them much less engaging and I can’t imagine anybody would want to read them. I know controlled reading is part of the Wilson program, but I will just stick with the dictation book from the program going forward. I find my students are extremely motivated to read books by Mo Willems or Dr. Seuss, because they are a lot of fun. Sadly these books are not so I returned them.

Amazing Confidence builder for beginning readers who struggle!
These books are great for beginning readers who struggle. There are 9 Dog On A Log Chapter Books that I have found. They work great with students who are working with the Orton Gillingham program and great with the students who just need an easier chapter book. The stories are surprisingly interesting in their simplicity. Each book is based on Phonics Progression and lists what they focus on. This makes it easy for instructors to match the books to the needs of the student. My students love them. I feel these are a fantastic addition to any reading interventions that a student is working on.

Great for practice
Great for confidence building and practicing skills. My son reads these books strictly to practice what he's learning in intervention and tutoring. It has made a huge difference with his rate of progress. At this point, reading is still more like completing a puzzle than enjoying a story and interest level doesn't matter as much as the ability to feel successful. He accesses grade level/above level content through audio.

Excellent application of the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading
It is very encouraging to see the attention to detail in following a proven learning style. These books will be a big help for dyslexic readers to advance their reading skills. I found the text engaging and the pictures interesting. Great work on the author's part to addressing the need for more reading literature. In addition the printables are intriguing as additional learning forms. Kudos to the author for creating an inexpensive reading series.

Dog on a Log chapter books are a VERY helpful Series
This is a very good series for struggling students. I like the big print, great for kids with vision issues. The repetition is very helpful teaching my 7 year old grandchild who has a few learning disabilities to read. My only complaint is that the series is kinda boring. We are half way through book two and although shes learning, I wish it was a bit more fun!

Decodable but for younger readers
The book is decodable but a little too much of a "baby book" for my eight year old - his word not mine. Perhaps would be better for a younger kid.

Good for beginners
Good for beginners especially dynamic kids learning to read. NO plot hard to get into.

Great confidence booster for the struggling reader
I bought this for our 6 year old who was struggling with reading. This simplifies the reading and has repetitive words so they have to work to break it down. After a couple weeks my little reader was able to use this book to give him the tools to be able to sound out other words in other books. Highly recommend this. Plus he felt like he was reading chapter books so it was a huge confidence booster.
