Team-Ups galore
“Amazing Spider-Man – Behind the Scenes” collects issues #24-28, with #25 being an extra-long issue (I make it 45 pages). The show opens with Mephisto in conversation with his psychiatrist – and hold on to your first thought, as it all turns out to be more complicated than you might think – and then segues into #25 where we have the New Electro holding a Broadway musical hostage, and it is up to MJ and Carlie Cooper to save the day while Spidey is off talking Doctor Connors down off a metaphorical ledge, and then Electro leads un into the three-part finale featuring an all new, all female, Sinister Six, though they are rebranded as the Sinister Syndicate, and their first paying job is to get hold of Boomerang and deliver him to the Kingpin, who has a big sub-plot under way to which Boomerang is the key. Unfortunately for the New Beetle, most of her team want Boomerang dead for one reason or another…Then Beetle’s new boyfriend turns out to be [spoiler], J. Jonah turns up with an alien invasion going on next door to his apartment, and who knows what else.Apart from being more of a comedy than a tragedy, this is how Spider-Man used to be when I was a kid – back in the Stan and Steve, and then Stan and John Sr., days. This really is how Marvel Comics used to be when they became #1, and Spider-Man outsold everyone else, especially the guys in capes. It really is that good, though the art is different…
