Not just a movie!
This movie is a treat for all Whitney Houston (the wife) fans. Her voice talents were the icing on the cake, and it keeps her music with us always. All the cast was so perfectly synced, chemistry was definitely there, and a sense of real friendships among them behind in the scenes.Denzel Washington, a real life angel in my opinion, was perfect as Dudley (Angel Dudley) "Dudley, Dudley, Dudley" Courtney Vance (the preacher) showed real heart in his performance of an overworked preacher. You can see it in his eyes how much he wants to do it all. I know this feeling because my dad was a pastor of a small poor church. Gregory Hines was great in his antagonist roll as Joe Hamilton. (I'm a big fan of his since his performance as Sergeant Cass, in Renaissance Man.) This movie will warm your heart. I always watch it around Christmas, but I love the music and the feeling it gives me so much, I watch it when I'm feeling low too. It's a remake of The Bishop's Wife with Loretta Young and Cary Grant, but really, it stands on it's on and should be viewed as such. Two thumbs way up in the air with an added Hallelujah, for this one.

Our favorite Christmas holiday film!
This film will always be one of our favorites. This contemporary re-make of "The Bishop's Wife" shines with wonderful performances by Denzel Washington, Courtney B. Vance, Jennifer Lewis, young Justin Pierre Edmund and the soul-stirring vocals of Whitney Houston. Turning despair into triumph - and containing just the right amount of humor - this film quietly resonates with faith and will put a song in your heart and a smile on your face. It's a genuine pleasure to recommend this family-friendly film.

Delightful
This movie takes off from the older Bishop’s Wife starring Cary Grant , Loretta Young and David Niven. This one has a similar plot but very different also. There’s still the angel (Denzel), the preacher (Courtney B. Vance) and the wife (Whitney Houston). Really a very good movie and, with Whitney in it, there’s lots of scenes with her singing….which is absolutely fabulous. She is soooo good! This angel is a contrast to Cary Grant in that you see him enjoying being back on earth as he plays in the snow and eats food. The mother-in-law (Jenifer Lewis) plays a very strong role with some good one-liners (“you can shop but don’t be putting in any layaway”)and the children are even believable. The church choir singing rocks! Gregory Hines does a very credible job as the “bad guy”. He has a great part at the end when he starts to get into the music….fun to watch his transformation. Nice, nice movie….heart-warming.

Better than the original!
Cary Grant is irreplaceable, but The Bishop's Wife was so dependent upon his performance that that movie was basically all him. Not so with this 90's remake, which has an amazing and well-balanced cast. Of course Denzel Washington is great, but what's notable is that he doesn't outshine the rest of the cast. His charisma doesn't splatter the walls and overwhelm the movie. And what a master stroke it was to cast the late Whitney Houston as the preacher's wife and the church's choir director, adding not just a likeable character but also a couple great vocal performances. She is perfectly natural in the latter role (it's not hard to imagine that she really was once a choir director in a church not unlike the one in the movie) and there's just not a drop of ego or divahood from a woman then nearing the peak of her stupendous career. (Witness her streaming with sweat, singing her heart out in the opening musical number. Evidently the woman had both pipes and faith.) And as if you didn't need more musical star power, Lionel Richie is also in the movie. And then there's the rest of the cast, led by Courtney Vance as the defeated eponymous preacher. His sad puppy routine is pretty much perfect. There's plenty more - just watch the movie. Great writing and some nice directorial touches bring it all together. The original is a great Christmas movie, but this one is better in almost every way. Even Cary Grant couldn't have made it better. This has become one of only two staple Christmas movies in our home (and yes, the other one has Jimmy Stewart).

Dudley has misadventures, the wife sings beautifully
I will always come back to this film for Christmas inspiration.Denzel Washington is masterful in his role of the angel. It is always a treat to hear Whitney Houston sing. The little boy is most precocious and the reverend is typically beset with the trials of managing an aging church.I only recently came to learn that this is a remake. No matter. Penny Marshall does a great job of directing it and giving new life to an old story.

Must Have! I love me some Whitney Houston
This is one of those feel Great movies. From the absolutely beautiful cast to the "reason for the season" story line, this movie is a must for your collection of holiday favorites. The movie shows that even the most faithful can be tested, tried and tempted but through GOD all things are possible. Jenifer Lewis playing as the mother in-law was the cherry on top of the perfectly cast cake.

The Preacher's Wife
Good remake of "The Bishop's Wife" with Cary Grant/Loretta Young/David Niven. Whitney Houston was very good as the dutiful wife that wanted her husband to focus as much on this family as he did his parish. Denzel Washington as the angel was awesome. The singing was great, the acting was great, and the story line was well done as it was modernized. Very good family movie.

All the feels
This was such a great movie. I hadn't seen it until this year when someone suggested it for our Christmas movie watching party. It wasn't what I considered to be a classic Christmas movie so I wasn't sure but I'm so glad we watched it. I even rented it myself to watch again with other people because it was so good.

Whitney at her very best
Sadly the amazing songstress is no longer with usBut in this film we see "the voice" in full and glorious flightWhitney powers her way through gospel songs .like "help is on the way"and then she smoulders with "I belive in you and me"The story is good the acting is good too; and this Christmas story ..will make you laugh ..cry ..and maybe even belive that miracles can come true .

It's Okay
Vaguely remember watching it about two weeks ago and thinking it was OK. But now I can't recall anything more about it! Obviously not a particularly memorable film - good or bad.

Love this film. Watched years ago and remembered it whilst watching something fairly similar. Love Denzal Washington anyway but Whitney’s def makes this film a film worth watching.

Enjoyable Christmas entertainment
I luuuuuurve Denzell in this version of the Preacher's Wife. It's a re-make of an older black and white version starring Cary Grant that is also excellent and another of my favourites!! Light hearted, non-violent entertainment for the Christmas holiday!!
