well worth the money
Very simple and easy to use. I needed it for mapping out the shortest distance for plotting a newspaper route. Worked wonderfully, saving me extra miles on my car, extra gas, and countless hours driving. Google was far too complicated to try and figure out the shortest distances. I would have spent hours just typing in all the addresses on my route. This mapwheel allowed me to just roll it over a map and plot the most efficient line of travel.

Excellent Tool
I don't normally leave reviews but I already love this product. I organize a hiking group and plan out hikes on a weekly basis. I just received this item today and was easily able to enter the scale of the map and figure out how many miles the hike is. Invaluable, before I was just making educated guesses on the length, now it's not a guess, it will be a calculation.

Great Tool
This is the coolest tool. So far I have used it to find the shortest distance on my regular trips. Some of my travels are not direct main road routs and using the map wheel has cut up to 10 miles off some of my "back road" travels. Its even a fun "final word" when several people say they know the shortest rout. This tool can be set up to measure any distance on any map. I can also see it as a blue print reading tool - 1 inch equals 1 foot (mile)or any scaleing applacation. Its quick, easy and more versital than map quest. Jim

Helpful tool to plan your hikes and backpacking adventures
Easy to use even when the instructions can be a little confusing. I already used it in measuring a trail in a map that don't have standard scales. It work really nice and help me plot a route for a 15 miles hike I am planning for January 2018. Be aware, the measurements will be as good as the time and ability you have to follow a trail drawing in a map so, what you are getting are very close estimates. To avoid surprises will be better to take the highest and lower numbers and use it to calculate an average. The construction of the Scalex is in plastic and made in China so, if you drop it there is a good chance that render it useless. Just be careful when you use it and definitely do not take it in the trail with you since humidity may damage it as well.

I know how far it is!
What a great device. I use 7.5 minute topo Quads to hike in the wilderness and this device helps me plan my trip and how far it is to each location. What a great way to plan and prepare for the trips. I have enjoyed learning to use it. This one also is much easier to use than a manual map wheel.

NOT FOR BLUEPRINTS!
I bought this thinking it could be used for blueprint takeoffs. The description shows it is completely scaleable, but that is not exactly accurate. This is a digitizer for geographical maps only. There is nothing wrong with the device as I see. I either didn't read the description well enough, or the description was inaccurate. When I went to use it on a large construction bid, it would not scale to my blueprints. The return date had already passed, so I guess I own it now. Big waste of money for me.

Not just for maps
I got this not to use on maps but to measure curves on pattern pieces and the like for sewing projects. The 1:6300 scale yields a read out ostensibly in miles but as I use it in inches. It works great! It came right on time and in perfect shape.
