Brawl In Cell Block 99 [4K UHD]

Watch it. Or don't. Don't do what I tell you to do.
Vaughn reprises his Wedding Crashers role in unforeseen ways. Doesn't have as much humor, but the ultra-violence and silliness keep me giggling regardless. Seriously though, Zahler is straight killing it in the biz, and I can't see where he takes us next... Great grindhouse flick!

An audacious prison movie from an explosive new talent
Remember this name: S. Craig Zahler. He is an emerging writer/director whose talent in both disciplines is stunning. This is his second film. If you like it, you will also like his first, “Bone Tomahawk.” Both films explore the same theme: honorable men making their way through a corrupt and brutal world. The level of writing, direction and cinematography as at a level nearly incomprehensible for a new director.Zahler's world is a violent one. Extremely so but not gratuitously so. There is a purpose to the carnage and wanton cruelty and it is a deeply existential one. By presenting good men's struggle to keep their honor in a bad world, and deliberately taking the action over the top, Zahler's work is like a knife that punctures our middle-class expectations of what a prison movie should be and, through the struggles of his protagonist (Vaughn), shows us how nobility of a sort can be wrested, at great cost, from the forces of stupidity and brutality that so often have the upper hand.Zahler is telling us that life is serious and must be taken seriously, that our actions can count for something, that even when paid for at the maximum price, being true to a personal code of honor and duty to loved ones is worth the cost. Doing the right thing at the right time elevates us from the jungle of tooth and claw and into a better place. This, and writing worthy of Hemingway. Not a single word is wasted. It’s obvious that everyone involved in this production gave their best effort. You will see an entirely transformed Vince Vaughn, and if there is any justice in the world, Don Johnson will get a supporting actor nomination. But this film is a little too out there for the prosaic sensibilities of the Academy. In fact, if like me you love movies and mostly hate the Academy Awards, this movie will provide you with the audacity and originality you have been craving.

Absolutely AWESOME!
Ever since I saw Craig Zahler film, Bone Tomahawk, I couldn't wait to see what his next film project was going to be and here we are with Brawl In Cell Block 99 which absolutely floored me! When I read that Vince Vaughn was going to be in this film, I will admit that I was a bit skeptical but I can see why the director casted V. Vaughn for this film because this film was perfect for Vaughn and you will see why after you finish watching this unique film. The characters, the theme/tone of the film, soundtrack, story, etc really made every minute of this film perfect. Not a single minute was wasted and the film length is perfect too. Please do yourself a favor and ignore all reviews because a lot of the reviews across the internet and amazon itself will give out any type of detail regarding this film. You can see how I don't give out any shred of detail about the story/plot, names of characters or songs, etc. Just ignore it and watch this film without watching the trailer as well because I am SO glad that I didn't watch any of the trailers until AFTER watching this film because the trailer is spoiler alert. Sadly, too many people will watch the trailer and will already have their minds 85% convinced on this film being good or bad which is a shame. Anyways, once again I will say that after seeing Bone Tomahawk and Brawl In Cell Block 99, I am certainly very much looking forward to S. Craig Zahler next film. Oh, if you own or do not own Bone Tomahawk digitally or physically, don't bother renting this film because you will end up buying (owning) the film immediately after finishing this film. I know I was certainly happy to buy this film digitally rather than renting it because I will be watching this film again in the future.

Brutal, another success from Zahler.
I loved 'Bone Tomahawk' so needed to watch this made two years later.Totally different and even more violent than that odd western. Vince Vaughn is a good looking man but all that is sacrificed here for his role as a hard man, drug dealer and enforcer and it works with his shaven head and limited dialogue (limited but very effective and cultured).Starts as a thriller but then twists into horror mode in the deep dank prison wing of a heavy duty corrective prison. As in BT from a western town and desert to caves and primitive cave dwellers. The film is stunning but horribly gory in places. Dexter's sister, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson and Udo Kier provide support but it's Mr Vaughn who runs away with the acting credits. The kind of role that Clint Eastwood would play in his worst nightmare. This edition includes English subtitles and a bonus feature.

Amazing cast of actors but could have been better directed or cut.
Was looking forward to watching this movie, mainly due to the outstanding cast, but, other than the very graphic fight scenes it was poorly directed, some scenes went on way too long, like when you watch an A rated movie cut scenes and see why they were cut from the movie, unfortunately this movie would have been very short and all violence if that happened here, lol.
