Days of Heaven - Richard Gere, Terrence Malick [DVD] [1978]

Not style over substance
You'll find many reviews of 'Days of Heaven' along the lines of: 'looks beautiful but lacks substance'. Let me say that, very similar to Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon', this is definitely not the case. The story seems straightforward and some of the dialogue simple but that's deliberate. Malick's masterstroke is to frame the film through the eyes of the teenage Linda Manz, so it's basically her story. It was a late decision to include Manz's voice over after the director was, rightly, impressed by Manz's brilliant performance. And, yes, it does have a case to be considered 'the most beautiful film ever made' due to Nestor Almendros' staggering cinematography. Still Malick's finest film.

Impressive filmaking
Loved this Terence Mallick film. Beautiful to watch, which is in contrast to the hardships shown in the story. Linda Manz is excellent in this. Richard Gere is also great as her brother. Highly recommended for serious film buffs!

Disappointing
Some impressively and beautifully shot scenes, but on the whole underwhelming

Beautiful visually but a very slight story
I was disappointed that there were no subtitles available on Amazon (or for that matter if you rent it on Sky) and that meant that these mumbling characters who often speak in local slang were difficult or impossible to understand. Still, with Wikipedia it doesn't take long to read up on the very modest plot and to realise that the girl marries the farmer hoping that he will die soon and she will then inherit all his money and property - a tale of ordinary country folk, obviously. Slightly similar in style to the brilliant "Badlands" but that was a movie which seemed to have something important to say, in contrast to this one which seems to be a vehicle to display the talents of the cinematographer. Days of Heaven? Blimey, it seemed like weeks. Not a movie I'd watch again.

Beautiful
As many others have said.... this is a beautiful film to watch. A feast for the eyes at every turn. This is cinematography at its very best. One of the few films I shall watch again and again. ..... and to top it all it’s got music from Leo Kottke - it cant get better than that! ( he even puts in a cameo appearance - waving from the back of the train at the end of the film ) jus’ sayin’

Still stunning and moving after almost 50 years!
The story, the narration and the cinematography are wonderful. It has been one of my favourite movies since its release.

Dreamlike
Senza sottotitoli in italiano.
