Very smooth reel. Needs a basic inspection before using.
I found the reel very smooth out of the box. The reel is surprisingly nice for the price range. The bail is smooth and returns easily when the handle is turned. The handle is large and provides a comfortable grip. Here's the down side items, but not deal breakers if dealt with. Drag washers are installed in layered pairs. This reel uses felt and steel washers. As you remove them, you should have steel, felt, steel, felt, steel, then felt. There was no felt washer at the end which results in metal to metal contact between the last washer and the spool. I ordered 3 Smoooooth(not a typo) brand #23 Carbontex washers. The O.D. is a couple of thousandths big, but can be easily sanded/filed to fit. I recommend a light coating of Cal's universal grease on the carbon disc. The other issue is that the teeth on the main gears were bone dry. A coat of Cal's grease did the trick. Any grease rated for fishing reels should do fine. The grease took the reel's smoothness to the next level. The carbon drag washers are very smooth also add a lot of drag tension at a low cost.

This may be one of the best fishing reels I've ever had the pleasure of using
This may be one of the best fishing reels I've ever had the pleasure of using. There are so many awesome features but the ones that stand out to me the most are the size, the ease of use, and the quality of the materials. To begin, the reel is MUCH larger than I expected. I'm used to the regular sized ones you find in the sporting goods area of your average store. This feels like it's almost double that size. The big benefit of this is being able to use the thicker line. I'm excited to explore fishing for larger fish!Another major noticeable feature is how SMOOTHLY it turns. I'm talking SMOOTH. With 12+1BB, it's like slicing through soft butter. Almost no effort put in and it completes it's 4.6:1 turns so easily that when catching fish, you will not be struggling to turn the reel because of gear issues. Work smarter and not harder. And finally the quality of the materials. It has a die cast aluminum body and you can feel how solid the piece is. It's got a good weight to it. In fact, if you're used to the cheapo light ones that I've normally bought, the quality and substance to this reel is definitely felt in the weight. At 25.2oz, it's not light. But the features EASILY make up for it.Overall, I highly recommend this reel to anyone looking for a high quality reel at an amazing price. It works so smoothly that fishing will be even more fun with even less to encumber you. We are very happy with it, and hope you will be too.*Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this product for my honest and unbiased feedback. Great real, can wait to get out in the Gulf to uses it again.
This is a ball bearing fishing real. This real is very well made. I had my husband put new line on the real. He has put it on a real for me. Once he got it all put together, I got in the year and was checking the casting of it. With it being a spinning real, I was able to pull it back and cast it with not problems. It reals the fishing line back in just fine, The handle is very easy to use. I had no problem with this and can not wait to get to the Gulf to use it. I received this item for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

A solid, smooth, well built reel.
This review is for the 8000 series.Reel Size:Don't be fooled by the pictures. This reel is quite large (see photos). Based on the listing photos, I was expecting a smaller reel. I checked the listing and the only metric I could find that would help determine size is the line capacity. Here is the line capacity stated for the 8000 series: Line Capacity(mm/M) 0.40/300 0.50/200 0.60/130. At .4mm, you're looking at about 18lbs line. At this size, this reel is more suitable for saltwater fishing.Reel Body:The body is made from die cast aluminum. You can really tell the quality by holding this reel. The housing feels solid, and all the parts are of high quality.Gear Ratio:The gear ratio is marked at 4.6:1. I tested this and it is spot on. A gear ratio of 4:1 is considered a slow-speed reel because a relatively small amount of line is "picked up" during the cranking process (four wraps of line around the spool with each crank). The benefit is that these reels provide more torque for reeling in large fish. A 6:1 ratio is considered a high-speed retrieve. A high, low or medium speed retrieve should be determined by the style of fishing you intend to do. Again, this ties in to the size of the reel and is most suitable for big fish and saltwater fishing.Ball Bearings:The smoothness of reeling is very important. You don't want to end up with a reel that is choppy while reeling. Most people say the bare minimum is 4 ball bearings. This one has 12+1, and you can tell. The reeling motion is so smooth, and close to or better than any reels I currently have. This is one area that you don't want to skimp out on when selecting a reel.Drag System:The drag is responsible for applying pressure to a hooked fish, and letting out line during the fight. Without a smooth, high-quality drag the risk of broken lines and lost fish is a high probability. I added some line and tested out the drag and was pleasantly surprised. It pulls out smoothly and won't cause any issues on the water.Spools:The spool on a spinning reel plays an important part, not only for holding line, but also for casting distance and smoothness. The spool on this reel is aluminum, which is heavier than graphite, but offers greater strength and rigidity under pressure. This spool is also a "long cast" which means that it is shallower than a regular style but much longer in length. This elongated spool allows for less line friction, allowing increased casting distance for the angler.Overall this is a great reel. If you are looking for a bigger reel that is good for saltwater fishing, or fishing for big fish, then this reel will suit you quite well. The high quality parts and construction will make this a long lasting reel that will bring in lots of fish (hopefully). I will update this review after trying it out on the waters and let you know of any more benefits or issues that may arise.
