Drawn to Nature: Through the Journals of Clare Walker Leslie

Preserve memories of the natural world with lines and color
I really enjoyed this book. Leslie makes the world of nature journaling available to anyone who can wield a felt-tip pen and a child's watercolor brush, regardless of where they spend their days. And nights. One does not need much money to keep a meaningful record. Her focus is on willfully taking the time to pay attention to what is going on in the world around you, whether it is urban or rural. Drawing contours engages the brain and builds memory in a way that mere photography does not.Nature journaling is an avenue of life-long learning, contributes to good mental health, and promotes care for the environment. Recommended for all ages and skill levels. Lines and colors for all.

Perfect for all age levels
At first I thought I had bought the wrong book...but this book is perfect for all ages. It is a great introduction to nature journaling for anyone that can hold a pencil or crayon. I love the examples of tracking the weather and how much information the author gives with a few simple swipes of watercolor. There are so many examples of her observations of the outdoors in this book that anyone could use it for teaching children to observe nature or draw or even teach adults to relax and focus for stress relief. I love the "look inside feature" that allows me to preview Amazon purchases and I love this book. It will be used over and over in the many ares that I teach.

Highly Recommended
Love this book. Just pick it up and open to any page. The pages from her journals come complete with spelling errors. I found the watercolor pictures to be inspiring. I always thought you had to strive for Audubon quality in your drawings to be meaningful. Not so. There are many illustrations that she does with just swooshes of color to convey a sense of time and place.

A Sketcher's Delight
I bought the book because I happened to see the book in a store. On page 63 in the identification drawings there are some drawings of meadow grasses, simple but detailed. I thought there might be more instruction but it really isn't that kind of book. Each page is delightful though and gives me ideas of what I could do.

Inspirational and approachable!
This is the perfect book to keep open while your children learn the art of sketching and keeping a Nature Journal. It's inspirational yet approachable. Many days her entries are simply colors to represent what she's seen. Even a reluctant student will appreciate that and be able to do the same.

Lovely and engaging sampler
Looking to begin sketching nature au plain air, I purchased this to get some sense of the variety and spectrum of sketching and annotating used by talented artists. I was not disappointed! Ms.Leslie's lovely work captures the natural world beautifully, and demonstrates that sketchbooks do not have to be completed thoughts or works, but rather impressions of a time or place.

LOVE this book.
I love this book. It is absolutely beautiful. There are so many great little surprises through out. I found myself looking up authors mentioned occasionally, also books. I was really inspired to start including more nature in my journaling and the book gave me enough jumping off points that I didn't feel completely over whelmed.I also loved the learning to draw bits through out the book. It really helps those of us who may not draw get lost in the book and then disappointed when trying it out. This book is a much loved book in my home and I recommend it completely!
