Is yubico setup for one fingerprint or two?  If one, what happens when finger is cut or burned on grill?

Yubico not support fingerprints. It is use for accept human presence. So if you insert yubico in pc or use nfc on smartphone. You can add "required touch" for every authentication operation. Touch approve that it is operation accept by real people. There is not a zero chance, if you do not confirm the action with a touch, then the attacker can use your yubico without your knowledge when you left it in the computer. This mechanism is designed to protect against such attacks.

This is an extremely common device. Why are there only 17 reviews, and even fewer for other Yubico devices?

Likely because people value convenience over security, and this is a secure device.

Also, the bad reviews that I've scanned come from people who simply do not understand what multi-factor access means. This device augments your username and password (that which you KNOW) with the device itself (that which you HAVE).  When used correctly, if your password is compromised it does an attacker no good unless they have the device as well.

for myself, I used separate passwords for various purposes, so a single breach will not place at risk my other accounts. And most are not protected by MFA, since thet are trivial.  But for VPN access into my home, and finance accounts, I do use hardware based MFA.  A small price to pay for the added protection when there are significant consequences to a single breach.

can a pair of these be set up so one can be used as an emergency backup if the first one is lost?

If you are buying this, you should buy two. Yes, using a second one as a backup is exactly what you want to do. Otherwise, if the first gets lost or broken, you are locked out of the accounts you set up.
