Entering Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle: A Reader's Companion

If you are ready to enter another chapter in your life where you will better understand yourself, others and God, then you must read this book. You will experience Teresa through the author's seemingly intimate relationship with her and the historical background that makes her life so captivating, especially for women. While this book will require much thought and reflection, the writer easily maneuvers you through each dwelling place and her observations will guide you to gain that more personal relationship with your own soul so you can truly experience the powerful love of God. This book flows with wisdom, spiritual guidance and will lighten your burdens. I highly recommend reading this book, as it is one of the "diamonds" that will be reflected in your own soul.

Dr. Ahlgren's book is a very accessible companion reader to Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle. While Dr. Ahlgren had access to and studied the original manuscripts of the work in Spain, her approach makes this Doctor of the Church readily available to the contemporary reader and guides the reader through the rooms of Teresa's Castle. She provides an important key to unlock the doors to these rooms when she highlights Teresa's use of Eros and its important role in the mystical journey. As an impetus moving us ever inward to the heart of the Castle, the reader discovers in the light of Eros that "Within erotic love, I am both more me and more than me." Ahlgren gently points the reader to the Divine Spouse who is at the Castle's center.

After reading Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle several times and examining my prayer life and experiences, I bought this book so as to supplement my understanding of spiritual growth. This book has really helped me to further understand the Interior Castle. It says a lot in a few words and so I encourage others to read and reflect upon it a little at a time.

This book is hard to understand and really get into the crux of it all. I have not finished it, because it was rather arcane. I feel the author was too nebulous in writing about the "interior" rooms of the spirit/soul. I wished to know what specific steps were taken as one entered into each room and what the different possible feelings/outcomes could be for people other than Teresa.
