Configuring a RAID-0 over six SSDs was a cinch!
I've had 6 SSDs configured in a RAID-0 on this controller for almost four years and have never had any issues with it. My OS (ArchLinux) views the configuration as a standard hard drive and required no additional configuration; there is no need for dmraid with this controller. The controller has an optional, battery-backed cache module that will flush any pending writes to your disks in the event of power failure. I've had data corruption from performing a hard shutdown on an unresponsive computer before, but never since I installed this controller and the aforementioned module. It works well and reliably.

It's not a new card :(
This doesn't come in the original package. I wish I had known it was not new. For the price I thought it would be. The previous one I purchased from Amazon with the same exact description a year ago was brand new. I find it misleading. I am hoping it works. Will update the review once I confirm.

Battery discharged
Battery was discharged.LSI would not support this card. They say it's from an old dell server and not LSI branded. Card failed. It disappears randomly.

Works with both SATA and SAS drives
I acquired the retail version of this controller which includes the license of the RAID software in the purchase price. Apparently the cables for connecting to the drives are polarized, so you have to get the right ones, other wise the controller will not be able to recognize the drives. If you get the correct cables, you need to make sure they are firmly connected to the controller. This can be hard to do if the controller is already installed in the computer. Once installed and hooked up with compatible drives, the set up is relatively straight forward. I had to work with a Broadcom engineer to identify the cable problem for several days but he was patient and helped narrow the problem down to the cable. Since installing I have been running it as a RAID 60 system with 8 drives. I have updated the firmware twice without incident. Be sure to read the instructions first! I downloaded the MegaRAID software from the Broadcom website along with the drivers and firmware updates and the command line interface program. It has worked well and gives good performance. I have the power backup package and 1 Gig buffer system. Works well, I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a fault tolerant disk system for their computer and is comfortable adding new cards to their computer. I build my own. Oh, and just to be on the safe side, use a grounding strap and pad when working inside your computer.
