Meh.
My kid and I read this once, and she hasn't reached for it since. Some people may like the rhyming nature of the book, but it reminded me too much of the rhythm of The Night Before Christmas. The story didn't make a ton of sense, either, really - the fern comes across as kind of a jerk, so I'm not sure why the bear keeps trying to get her to go on a walk anyway. Then, out of nowhere, after the bear leaves for good, she wants to walk? I know a rhyming book is by nature more brief than a story-book, but this tries to cover too much with not enough explanation. My kid didn't care about the characters, and I got annoyed at reading the sing-songy, forced rhymes.

Great, sensitively told story for preschoolers who are a little introverted/need a confidence boost
Great book for 3-4 (or older?) year old for increasing confidence or addressing any insecurities in a not so in your face way. Fern is presented as a well loved character and her lack of confidence and grumpiness isn't overblown. Bear is the patient and loving friend who is just a little more comfortable in his skin. Most importantly, he loves Fern, respects her unwillingness to leave her spot, but never gives up on her. The book presents Fern as gaining some joy from just watching Bear, which introverts will understand. And when Fern is left alone, and the new situation forces her out of her comfort zone to explore, Bear shows his extraordinary loyalty and love for his friend as he reappears just in time to share in her exploration. I could honestly get choked up writing this review, which the parent of a young child who has a little trouble socially, or is on the introverted side, can understand. Basically if this review touches any part of your parental heart strings, get the book as a gentle fable for your child.

Must have for any child ❤️
I’ll be honest. I’m very blunt in my reviews and comments on Amazon. So when I have something nice to say, it’s genuine. I see too many parents give awful reviews for absolutely ridiculous reasons on kid’s books. Now yeah I admit my kid is only 4 months so he’s young yet but this one of the few I’ve picked up that I even love reading and see true multi reads in it without it getting old. It’s not preachy, obnoxious, in your face politics for kids way too young or condescending. I’m also very happy to support an author in my state. I came across his other book months ago with interest but only purchased this and that one recently. His books have an amazing message I’m happy to tell my child as he grows. I also love the inconsistency in this case in illustration as he seems to use a different artist for a different story. (I guess rather than book series or those who write and illustrate their books). As for the book itself, the illustrations are beautiful but they also enhance the well written poetic story that makes this an instant hit. It’s a simple story but gets the point across that leaves the reader emotionally satisfied in the end. Granted as an adult I love it. With kids being unpredictable who knows if my son will take to it but I will continue to regularly read it until he’s old enough to tell me otherwise.

The most important thing is trying, when you're ready
This is a sweet story meant for any youngster who's afraid of doing something. Anything. A stuffed bear becomes friends with a fern and can't understand why Fern won't go for walks with him at night when everyone is asleep. She explains that plants can't walk and are meant to stay in one place. Bear sadly continues with his walks and exploring, and Fern watches him from the window. Over time Bear has become a little worn and Fern has grown taller. The family moves and a man brings a box to pack up some last items, including Bear. He leaves Fern behind. She's sad and misses not seeing Bear play outside. And, for whatever reason, she finally tries to move. With much effort she manages to hop and cries. All of a sudden Bear appears and invites her to go on a walk. The friends are reunited and it's up to readers to speculate on what happens next. I'd recommend this book especially for kids with special needs. The ending is not going to be the same for everyone attempting something difficult, but the effort is the important part. Illustrator Manning uses glowing colors with a spotlight on the important characters, and Miletsky is a gifted storyteller who has captured the art of rhyming at its best.

So cute but a little sad. Gorgeous art and rhyming.
The whole book rhymes and the illustrations are gorgeous. It’s a little sad as the bear and fern get old together but the story comes back around and ends nicely. My three year old likes it alright but hasn’t specifically requested it yet for book time. I love reading it to her for the rhyming since it gives it such a nice flow to read aloud. Be prepared to have a voice for the bear and fern. A deep man voice will be useful too. Very cute and certainly one of my favorites. I hope it will grow on her and become a regular.

A lovely warm story about an unusual friendship.
I never thought I could find a book about a toy bear and a houseplant so touching. A lovely warm story about an unusual friendship.Excuse the pun, but I was literally “rooting” for Fern the houseplant by the end. The wonderful illustrations really complement this sweet story very well.

Beautiful story and illustrations
Stunning illustrations! My two boys, 6 and 9yrs, loved the story and it sparked discussions about friendship, loyalty, new beginnings and accomplishing things we’re scared to try. Highly recommended.

A beautiful bittersweet tale about an unusual friendship and the reward of both patience and trying something you think you can’t do.
