Great! Fit into 2 5 1/4" disk bays.
I purchased this 3-bay hot-swappable disk enclosure to improve cooling for my disks, as my tower was running them a bit warm. The built-in fan has been very effective at keeping the disks cooler. It also replaced three full-height hot-swap drive caddies, consolidating the space and simplifying my setup. Installation: This enclosure is designed to fit into two CD-ROM bays. My case only had two standard drive bays available, so I needed to flatten the 8 positioning "ears" that align hard drives/floppys in the bays. This was a simple adjustment with a small hammer, though not something I planned for. If your case has two CD-ROM bays, installation should be a breeze and take just a few minutes. Cabling and Functionality: The cabling is straightforward and easy to manage once installed. It uses two power connections for the three disks, and the instructions provide a very helpful tip: connect the power from two different cable bundles. This setup helps prevent interruptions to other disks during hot-swapping, which is a thoughtful design feature. Overall, this is a well-designed enclosure that performs great for its intended purpose. It’s a particularly good solution if you’re looking to consolidate or upgrade from individual full-height caddies. Just be sure your case has the appropriate CD-ROM bays, or be prepared for a minor adjustment during installation.

StarTech.com 3-Bay Hot Swap Backplane
I purchased this StarTech.com 3-Bay Hot Swap Backplane for installation in my iStarUSA 2U Compact Server Chassis (D-214-MATX). The server chassis has 2x5.25 ODD cage in it that was going unused - the StarTech.com 3-Bay Hot Swap Backplane fits perfectly. My short depth 2U case is fairly cramped due to its shallow depth (~15.5 inches/~40cm), and the included HDD mounting locations can be difficult to access, especially if you are using a 4 DIMM mATX motherboard, as the motherboard runs underneath the 3.5" HDD mounting locations - at best I was only going to be able to install 2x3.5" HDDs in the upper locations of the dual mounting brackets - the lower locations are virtually unusable for 3.5" HDDs as they would interfere with the 24 pin motherboard power cable, 4xDIMM slots, and 6XSATA ports. The StarTech.com 3-Bay Hot Swap Backplane allowed me to leverage the unoccupied 2x5.25 ODD drive location to expand the 3.5" HDD capacity to more than 3 drives. I also installed a SFF power supply to give me additional cabling room as the StarTech.com 3-Bay Hot Swap Backplane sits in front of the PSU (see photos). I have seen some complaints about the included cooling fan being noisy - my server is installed in an unfinished basement where noise isn't an issue. I have also seen complaints about the drive doors being flimsy - I am not really using the hot swap capabilities so not really an issue for me - the drive doors seemed adequate to me for the one-time installation of my 3x3.5" HDDs - I believe the doors would be adequate for hot swap situations if they are operated carefully, but if you're looking at these for continuous hot swapping, perhaps there are more robust alternatives - overall the build quality seemed very good to me (I am a bit puzzled by the brushed aluminum black enclosure though, as this item is installed internally where that nice finish detail will never be seen). There are switches on the back of the unit that allow both the fan and the HDD activity lights to be turned on/off - they are both left on in my case as the light/noise are not an issue in my unfinished basement, which serves for the most part as my "lights out" server room. There are 3X SATA cables included, a nice touch. I am very pleased with this purchase, as it makes installing hard drives in my 2U case a breeze - SATA power and data cabling are a one-time effort, and mean there won't be a prolonged disassembly/reassembly process when adding or replacing drives. 5 stars.

Does the job well; but... aluminum frame? Blue LEDs?
GOOD: • Hot-swap drives are always a good thing. • Lets you get hot-swap drives on inexpensive rackmount cases, where such things are inexplicably rare. • Comes with all necessary accessories and parts. • Works with bare drives—doesn't need sleds, which are a pain to install and always proprietary • Uses standard PC cabling • Includes ventilation fan, useful if you're running very hot drives • Price is reasonable considering the niche application • Instructions are clear and complete • Works well NOT SO GOOD: • It's made from aluminum; I'm concerned about the long-term durability of steel screws attaching the aluminum chassis to a steel PC case. It's a recipe for corrosion. • Fan adds extra depth to the unit, which may make for a very tight fit in some cases (or prevent it from working at all in others) • The location and orientation of the three SATA ports precludes you from using SATA cables with right-angle connectors, and makes clean routing more difficult • Requires two SATA power connectors *on different power rails* to avoid drive power failure upon a hot-swap, due to power draw; doesn't provide much help on how to verify your power supply's cords are on different rails. Might've been better if it used a higher-capacity connector instead • Power connectors located outboard of SATA connectors further complicates cable routing • Drive bay keys offer laughable security and are easy to lose, especially given their extremely tiny keychain hole... but at least when you lose them, it shouldn't be hard to pick with a paperclip • Included SATA cables are on the short side and seem relatively low-quality • Sledless operation may complicate using 2.5-inch drives, as you may need an adapter that more closely mimics the dimensions of a 3.5-inch drive • No enclosure-services support UGLY: • Blue LEDs. Bright, distracting blue LEDs. Hot-swap 3.5-inch SATA drive bays are for servers, not gaming rigs. The drive LEDs should be red. BOTTOM LINE: If you need a hot-swap drive bay for 3.5-inch drives, this is a solid choice in a niche market. While there's room for improvement, it'll do the job just fine.

Solid product
This helped me out when I discovered the case I bought had an HDD bracket that could only hold 2 drives despite Micro Center saying it could hold 3. I needed three HDDs (for infrequently-used archival data in a RAID setup). Though this was not designed to be used this way, I removed the supplied HDD bracket and installed this in its place in the base of my mid-tower case. I replaced the supplied fan with one that's controlled by the motherboard. Drives seem to be happy in there - not overheating (33-35 degrees C) and no weird errors. I've bought other StarTech products before and will continue to do so.

Great solution for older PC cases!
Have an old (2005!) Antec Sonata II case whose computing components I have upgraded over the years. Not as slick as today’s cases, but it had some nice convenience features at the time and they still do their job. The case has a 3 x 5-14” cavity where I still house a DVD ROM reader, so that left me with 2 empty slots. As part of converting this rig into a NAS this 3-bay 3.5in hard drive enclosure fit perfectly into the remaining empty space. I wired it up, added 3 hard drives and was up and running in no time. The HDs slide in and out nicely and the drive lights (you can turn them off if not needed) are a nice touch. Very impressed so far with this unit. There are others similar to it out there at a lesser price, but I have found StarTech’s products to be top notch. Worth the price for me. Recommend it to you as well.

Warranty Not Honored...
So when I got this I only had 2 drives to put in it. I decided to put them into the very top and the very bottom caddies. These have worked great for the 15 months I've had this. A few months ago I got a 3rd drive and stuck it in the center caddy. Proxmox started to occasionally report problems with that center drive, but the errors where somewhat strange because when I would go to check the disk, everything appeared fine so I'd clear the error. But then the errors started coming faster and faster and eventually my drive appears to have a controller problem (so the platters are fine). The drive is under warranty so while I waited to get my replacement I put an older drive I had laying around into it temporarily. It quickly started having similar problems. OK...so I'm unlucky and my old drive is going out. No problem, I had yet another old drive and I put that one in. Started having the same problems. To get this determined once and for all, I setup a SATA dock (separate from this) and put the drive into it. After a couple weeks, there hasn't been a single hiccup. OK, so maybe something is wrong with the caddy or the backplane. Figured this is suppose to have a 2 year warranty and I'm well within that. But, I noticed that unless you bought this just recently, Amazon wants you to go to the manufacturer which they kindly provide a link to. So I filled out the manufacturer request for help form and waited, and waited...and waited. Finally I thought maybe something happened and so I repeated the process and filled out another request. Again I waited and waited. Finally I found a place where you can just go straight to an RMA request. I thought that will do it for sure...nope, they ignored it. Try and call them...nope, no one answers. Literally what can you do with the best warranty if the manufacturer just ignores you? Yep, nothing. I will not buy another StarTech product because for me, it comes with no warranty (unless you get a bad one up front and Amazon is willing to swap it for you). My final recommendation, do not buy because there appears to be no way to get help (or warranty service) from the manufacturer if the situation arises. I've decided this purchase is a loss and have moved on to another manufacturer's product. Hopefully if you read this, I'll have saved you from what I went through.

Excellent quality! Get this.
Excellent quality, heavy, metal! Just be gentle with the doors. Feels solid quality! Loving it. I also got a QNAP TR-002 to try, but the quality is of that is inferior, lightweight and plastic, no hot swap of individual drives in individual mode, the only diagnostics are through QNAP RAID Manager. Returning the QNAP. The power light is the same color as the drive lights. I put yellow tape over the power light; now it looks green instead of blue. I am using it external to the PC case, using long SATA and power cables. 18/20 inches puts it just next to the ATX case (so I recommend an additional foot for flexibility e.g., up to 1 meter (39") -- the maximum length for SATA). I put soft feet on the bottom of the StarTech. For convenience, there are available 4 or 6 long SATA cables bundled together in a sleeve. I changed my computer's BIOS settings to make these ports "hotswap" "removable drives". Now I can use Windows 10 "Safely remove drive" to stop any individual drive. Also available (but unfortunately not on Amazon): backplates with 1 Molex power connector and 2 SATA-to-eSATA connectors, and eSATA to SATA cables. --> So you could make this product disconnectable without "internal" SATA data and power cables passing through the rear of the PC -- which is how I am using it now, and that is acceptable for a server that is not moved often. (Note that true eSATA uses higher voltages, not just different cables and connectors, to reliably use greater than 1 meter of cabling.)

Love Love Love this hard drive expansion
Well designed to be compact enough for 3 full sized (3.5") internal hard drives. Turned my $50 case into a storage tower with a total capacity of 8 full sized internal drives and I still have a single optical bay for disc ingesting. Lost the safety screwdriver within 2 minutes so you might need a safety triangle bit. Works well with PCI expansion card for sata interface, no errors.

Excellent performance, easy swapping and additional cooling
I originally bought two of these to enable easy swapping of drives in a backup server. They have worked flawlessly since then, running 24/7 for over a year. The build is robust and swapping out drives is very easy. I later added one to my desktop PC because I have a 24TB drive that runs very hot, but the built in fans in this enclosure also cool the drives far more than any case fan. Since moving the drive to the enclosure I have had no problem with overheating. So, great for swapping drives but also great for cooling drives.

These are working as intended
No issues, fan on lowest setting is still audible but not loud imo, measured 30-35db with a phone app

Excelente

Saluti a tutti.
