The MILEPOST 2019: Alaska Travel Planner
H**E
The journey of a lifetime...
Alaska remains the journey of a lifetime for many visitors. Although access has improved over the years, Alaska and Northwest Canada are still underdeveloped compared to the lower 48 U.S. states and southern Canada. A carefully planned journey offers the opportunity to experience a world before urbanization, where wild animals still roam a landscape covered with forests, streams, lakes, mountains, tundra, and glaciers. In Alaska and Northwest Canada, it is still possible to spends hours, days or weeks in the wild, with minimal contact with other humans. There are no end of outdoor adventures involving fantastic hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, snow machining, dog sledding, fishing and hunting. All this fresh air and open spaces come with a challenge. There are few roads and very limited tourist infrastructure. You'll need the Milepost to find the gas stations, restaurants, stores and places to sleep with a roof over your head. These facilities may be few and far between, and separated by highly variable weather and fair to partly crappy roads. What there is tends to fill up quickly, especially in summer. Planning ahead is a great way to ensure a positive experience. The Milepost is just the planning resource that most visitors need. Even the locals tend to carry a copy in the car or truck. The 2018 version of "The Milepost" is the 71st edition of this incredibly useful travel guide. Upfront, it offer practical tips to the visitor, whether arriving by road, sea or air. Most importantly, the Milepost offers a mile-by-mile travelogue, updated annually, for the main roads, along with maps, diagrams of some key towns, photographs and advertisements for attractions, accomodations, and other travel facilities. It includes small delights that might not make it into guide books, like scenic overlooks of glaciers, or places to book a fishing trip. It includes basic information for the Alaska Marine Ferry System, a way to see Southeast Alaska from the water and take your vehicle with you. Of note, the Alaska Marine Ferry System may undergo restructuring in the near future. Use the digital link to get updates. This guide is a must-have resource for those planning an extended trip, whether by car, RV, or camper. The Milepost is most highly recommended. Don't leave home without it.

Great guide through Canada enroute to Alaska
We drove from the US to Alaska via Canada and this guide was really good in helping us find rest stop facilities, gas, food, and describe the roads we would be driving. We were not sure about the conditions of many of the roads we were going to drive, so this was a really good reference. The reason I gave it 4 versus 5 stars is because if you are following the route in the book from a different direction (i.e. from the north to the south versus south to the north, etc.) you have to do a lot of math to figure out where you are in the guide. If Canada had more mile markers (particularly in British Columbia and the Yukon) they could have used these, but they don't. The book is so packed with information it is hard to take it all in, but I kept it on my lap and read it as we went. This book did give us a lot more confidence making this trek so it was really worth the money.

Alaska Go To Book for EVERYONE!
This is my first The Mile Post book I have ever bought. I have heard so much about these books I decided to buy one for my next trip to Alaska. This book is AWESOME and the information for every place you can think of is covered here to use. What a wonderful tool for anyone traveling to Alaska or living there. These books are HUGE and filled with maps and photos, charts and detailed to the max. I bought mine at a great price which makes me smile and enjoy the book that much more. So much to absorb and learn before my next visit. This is a go to book on everything Alaska and I can't wait until I get to use it in Alaska and not just reading it from my office at home. Well done to-all who contributed to this yearly addition, Well made quality book. Don't leave it laying out or around people try to borrow it and I doubt you'll get it back at least this is what I am finding out when visitors come calling at my home. Is as described.

Sooooo helpful
People who RV to Alaska swear by Milepost, but I doubted it would add much to the information I got online. I was so wrong. Not only does it have tons of details and advice about what you’ll encounter along the way, but there are several hundred miles where internet access is unavailable and having a paper copy saved our bacon more than once. (Your purchase does include an online version as well.) The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because it’s not intuitive, it’s easy to get lost (in the book) when you turn from one road to another, and if you’re traveling a route in the opposite direction of the book, it doesn’t always give you the heads up you would have gotten coming the other way (for example you read, “Watch for caribou the next 20 miles” at the end of the section instead of the beginning).

A must if you're traveling to Alaska!!
I wasn't sure how much I would use this but it was OH SO HANDY!!!! When I was in Fairbanks visiting my son who is in the Army, they had numerous fires caused my "dry thunderstorms" and the air quality went to hazderous in a matter of days. I couldn't take the smoke anymore and my son couldn't leave Fairbanks, so I grabbed my Milepost and drove to Valdez!! It was so helpful to at least know what I might see along the way, know where I was at any given time! Most of my drive to Valdez I didn't have any cell phone service. Having the Milepost gave me a little security knowing where I was at all times. I used this book more than I thought I would for the 2 weeks I was in Alaska! I gave the Milepost to the hotel I was staying at for someone else to use!

Great trip planner
This book literally offers every detail. If it's along the route between the US border and Alaska, the book has info on it. There are maps to several route options. We're going from Eastern Alberta into Alaska, loop around through Alaska, then back down through northern BC. This book offers us the ability to plan our trip down to the last detail prior to leaving. It's great especially since there isn't always feel phone reception along the way to look things up.

Indispensabile
Assolutamente consigliato per chiunque stia programmando un on the road tra alaska a Canada occidentale. Ricchissimo di informazioni, dettagli, suggerimenti per pianificare il viaggio. È in inglese, ma vale i soldi spesi.

Milepost
The book has a large Alaska component which I will not be using at all. It was simply overkill in terms of what I was looking for. In different circumstances it would be great, but not this time with the limited time I have . It would have made more sense for me to have ordered the previous edition at a much reduced cost. You can't get it right all the time.
