Review: Best moss for orchids - This review is specifically in the context of growing orchids. It is the only moss I will use for my orchids now, after trying many brands over the years. It is very, very good quality, clean, minimal debris, long, wide strands of quality moss. Excellent water retention because of how full and thick the strands are. I have never yet received a bad batch. Instructions for preparing for storage: It is not ideal to take strands directly from the dry block for use, as they will break and tear and make a mess. The best way to prepare this moss is to hydrate the entire block once you receive it in a sink of water. This will take about 30 minutes. Once the block is completely separated, drain the water and gently squeeze all the water from the moss. lay the moss out on a flat surface to completely dry. I put it out in the sun and it took about eight hours to completely dry. Then you can put it away and it will be ready to use whenever you need it.

**Q: What are the dimension of the bale (L, W, H) while still dry and in its plastic wrapping?**
A: The other answer is not true.  It is 3.5x5x9inches. It is way smaller than any other 12L package that I’ve gotten before, and when I hydrated it, it only made about 4 liters.

**Q: Is this suitable for mounting staghorn ferns in a wire basket or a wall mount?**
A: I don’t have experience with staghorn ferns. I use this for padding mounts for orchids and in small pots. If you intend to pad a wooden mount form ferns, this would work well. I would not fill a large basket with this because it holds a great deal of water and would be too soggy. If you are lining a wire basket it would be easier to use a coco fiber liner or use loose coarse coir fiber (coconut fiber), or buy coco fiber mat in a sheet. Wet before use. Good luck!

**Q: How many cubic feet will this cover?**
A: Am sorry I don't have the answer to this - I use it for orchid growing, but it is amazing how much moss this brick makes when it is dampened.  The dry quantity is very deceiving and just a tiny amount provides quite a lot of coverage when it comes in contact with moisture.

**Q: can this be use for air layering?**
A: It is very good quality moss.  I use it for mounting orchids, so it should work for air layering.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Long, fluffy, amazing quality

This product is top notch! I needed some high quality sphagnum moss to use as a substrate component for my orchids. I keep phalaenopsis, oncidium, paphiopedilum, and many more exotic kinds. Some of them needed repotting this spring. I have epiphytes and terrestrial orchids. Every orchid I have is in a unique mix that is optimized to give each plant the correct amount of air, moisture, and nutrients. Some of my orchids are grown semi-hydro style, potted in solely LECA (in gravel form, Turface). But not all of them do well in that medium, which is where this sphagnum moss comes in. I use: bark, moss, lava rock, coconut chips, charcoal, turface, sometimes perlite, all in different combinations. Sphagnum moss is a major component of my mixes. It provides excellent water retention, aeration when packed loosely, and some antimicrobial properties. This specific moss is very high quality. If you check out the Spagmoss website they explain how the moss is sourced, and it shows in the quality of the product. They hand pick it from cultivated moss fields in New Zealand and bring it to processing centers via helicopter where it is cleaned and air dried carefully. The strands are intact, they are very long and fluffy. The brick form it comes in expands immensely upon soaking with water. I only needed a big handful of it dry, to pot up 5 different orchids (mixed with other substrate amendments). To easily pot up an orchid, I would recommend soaking the moss in a small bucket and then squeezing it gently to remove most of the water so it is damp. Working on a tray is best so you can mix your substrate up and not make a big mess. Wearing some gloves helps. Mix some pieces of moss in with your other amendments and carefully fill in space in and around the root ball. If you need a long lasting high quality sphagnum moss for orchid potting or any other purpose look no further. This stuff is amazing!
